How to preserve the astilba bush acquired in winter until spring?

astilba in storage Most garden centers bring a new assortment of plants at the end of winter, for example, you can often find delenki on the shelves astilbe... It is clear that at this time there can be no question of planting them in open ground. What to do next with the seedlings purchased in February, and how to choose the right healthy cut?

We approach the choice of plants responsibly

When buying plants, many growers pay attention to the packaging first. Of course, everyone wants to see what the bush looks like and how it blooms. However, the photo on the package is a future look, and at this stage, the current general condition of the roots will be more important.

Despite the fact that astilba has a dense rhizome, it does not have tubers that store moisture and nutrients. Therefore, if the parcel is still dry in the package, the flower will no longer be accepted - it has died forever.

When buying rhizomes astilbe you should pay attention to the following points:

  • the roots should be in moist soil;
  • they should not be dry;
  • in the upper part, living kidneys (dormant or already awake) should be visible.

How to keep the astilba cut until spring?

In order for the astilba to "live" before the onset of heat, the acquired rhizome must be planted in a pot with nutritious soil. For this:

  1. Carefully align the roots, removing damaged and dry ones.
  2. Prune long roots a couple of centimeters to stimulate lateral root formation.
  3. Pour some earth on the bottom of the flowerpot.
  4. Install the dividend.
  5. Spread the roots.
  6. Cover with soil.
  7. Sprinkle abundantly with water to which Fitosporin is added. This will save the plant from decay.
  8. When the earth settles after watering, add more soil.

Instead of soil, it is also good to plant Astilba in coconut substrate.

The pot with the planted plant should be placed in a bright and cool room with a temperature of no more than 18 degrees Celsius. Now it remains only to observe the growth and periodically water the bush.

If the growth buds have not yet woken up on the parcel, it can be stored on the lower shelf in the refrigerator.

Astilba can be planted on a flower bed no earlier than May, when the night frosts end.

    Hello! We transplanted the astilba into a container along with the packaging substrate, everything seems to be fine, but the leaves began to dry out a little and shrink! What is wrong, and what else can you do?

      Where are you keeping her? If it’s warm in the house, it may be because the plant is hot. Move to a cool place. Can be spilled with fungicide for prophylaxis. If the transplant was recently, maybe the bush has not yet acclimatized to the new conditions of detention.
