When snowdrops bloom - the very first spring flowers

Tell me when the snowdrops are blooming? Last year we bought a private house and in the spring we have already moved to permanent residence from the city. The plot is small, so, a courtyard, a small garden and several front gardens. There is nowhere to break a vegetable garden, and we are not going to, but we plan to plant flowers. From the previous owners, only a few rose bushes and peonies remained. And this year I did not have time to plant anything due to repairs. Only snowdrops under the window - a new neighbor gave when she was planting hers. I'm a beginner flower girl, there is still a lot to learn. Now, I don't even know how these primroses grow.

It is not for nothing that they are called primroses, because when snowdrops are blooming, other plants are still in a state of winter dormancy and are just beginning their journey to awakening. Literally making their way out from under the snow, these staunch messengers of spring are the first to proclaim that the frost will soon recede.

The exact date of flowering primroses it is difficult and even impossible to name. Spring warming comes to different regions at different times. So, in the southern strip, where winters are warm, snowdrops can appear as early as January. The farther north they grow, the more the flowering time shifts. In the middle lane, it occurs in February or early March.

In addition, the species of Galanthus also affects the vegetation cycle. Some flowers bloom before everyone else, while other snowdrops can be called late at all.

What are snowdrops

Of the 12 species of these primroses, snowdrops can most often be found as a cultivated plant:

  1. Snow white. Bushes are low, about 10 cm in height. The flowers are white, with a pale green spot on the edge of the petals and barely yellow on the inside of the corolla. Bloom in March - April.snowdrop snow-white
  2. Broadleaf. The height of the bushes can reach 25 cm, but wide leaves are a characteristic feature of the plants. Bloom in April - May.broadleaf snowdrop
  3. Folded. The length of the leaves is about 12 cm with a peduncle height of up to 30 cm. The species is distinguished by slightly elongated flowers, resembling an ellipse. Bloom in February - April.folded snowdrop
  4. Elvis. Tall bushes up to 25 cm high with original blue-green leaves. The flowers are large, globular, bloom in February - March.snowdrop elvis

Flowering does not last very long - from 3 to 4 weeks, after which the aboveground part of the snowdrops dies off. Only bulbs remain in the ground, which next spring will again release narrow leaves and flower stalks.
