Features of growing a philodendron by seed
For the reproduction of the philodendron, the vegetative method is most often used. It allows you to quickly and without much hassle not only get a new plant, but also tidy up the old bush. However, it is not always possible to get a stalk. Do I need to prepare seeds?
Although the seeds of the philodendron have good germination, it is not 100%, and often flower growers complain that only one seed has sprouted from a whole bag, or even nothing has sprouted at all.
So that the purchased seeds do not disappoint, they just need to be prepared in advance by subjecting them to two important and necessary procedures:
- firstly, soak for a day in a growth stimulator;
- secondly, scratch each seed, damaging its shell.
What soil to sow?
At the stage of seed germination, light, loose soil will be required, since the seeds of the philodendron are small. In dense, heavy soil, it will be difficult for tender shoots to break through to the top.
For sowing, you can use a regular multipurpose substrate with a little coconut fiber added to it. At the bottom of the container, before filling it with soil, drainage should be laid, which will protect the seedlings from decay.
Spread the seeds on the surface of the soil, lightly sprinkle with earth and spray well with a spray bottle. Now it remains to organize greenhouse conditions for them: cover the container with a bag or a piece of glass.
Put the greenhouse on a warm windowsill with good lighting. In order for the seeds to germinate, they need high humidity, in addition, the air temperature in the greenhouse under the film must be at least 25 degrees Celsius.
How to care for seedlings?
Further care of the seedlings is the same as when growing seedlings of other indoor plants. The greenhouse must be aired daily, opening the cap for a few minutes, and periodically sprinkling the soil, preventing it from drying out.
