Weightless long heads of Peking cabbage with soft tender leaves are eaten with pleasure in salads even by children. It is not surprising that it can often be found in the beds next to the round heads of white cabbage. But unlike the latter, gardeners here often face a problem: what to do if Chinese cabbage has gone into bloom. There is little pleasant here, because, as in the case of radishes, the appearance of flowers means a loss of harvest. Instead of tying stalks, cabbage begins to bloom violently, releasing bunches of yellow flowers. It's beautiful, but not what we want. Why does this happen and what to do with such bushes?

Reasons for shooting Peking

In truth, flowering is by no means uncommon for this variety of cabbage. She is quite demanding and thus reacts to almost any breach of cultivation technology.

Most often, Peking cabbage begins to form inflorescences instead of heads in such cases:

1. Unsuitable variety. For the Russian climate, choose more stable hybrids, including with respect to shooting.
2. Excessive lighting. If the daylight hours are more than 12 hours, wait for flowering.
3. Planting too late in spring or early in summer. Those suffering from frost and sudden changes in planting temperatures will definitely go to the arrows.
4. Damage to the root system. When planting seedlings and loosening row spacings, do not hook the roots. This will provoke the cabbage to finish its cycle earlier without wasting time on fruiting.
5. Lack of nutrition. Peking needs potassium and phosphorus to set and ripen heads of cabbage. But it will bloom without them.
6. Moisture deficiency also promotes shooting.

Try to plant Peking near buildings that partially protect it from the sun, or cover the garden in the afternoon. Start planting in late April or late July, cover the bushes in case of frost. A month before planting in open ground, apply to the site superphosphate and potassium sulfate.

What to do if Chinese cabbage is blooming

Actually, there are no options here - pull out such plants without pity. They will not be useful in the kitchen, because the leaves have acquired bitterness and will ruin any dish. Some hostesses soak them in cold water and assure that it is very possible to eat such cabbage. Indeed, the bitterness leaves it, but along with it and vitamins, so in fact you have weed.

However, do not rush to throw out the Peking that has gone into the arrow. It will also come in handy on the compost heap and utility yard. The delicate leaves decompose quickly and serve as a useful component for compost. And pets will eat them with pleasure - the bitter note does not prevent them from enjoying vitamins.
