A beautiful shrub from the Molochaev family attracts attention with its original flowering. The flowers themselves are small and rather inconspicuous, they do not represent anything special. But large stipules, with their papery structure and the most incredible colors, immediately distinguish the plant from the rest. Another feature of poinsettia is that it blooms closer to winter, and rests no more than two months, starting at the end of February.

In general, this flower is not very capricious and may well be grown as a perennial, although some growers, after the end of flowering and the fading of growth processes, simply throw out the plant and then buy a new one. If, nevertheless, it is decided to leave the poinsettia, it is important to immediately pay attention to the soil in which it will grow, because the further development of the plant and the possibility of its flowering depend on this. So, in order to preserve a flower, you need to know when and in what soil it should be transplanted.

What kind of land does poinsettia love?

Like all milkweed, poinsettia needs a very light earth, good moisture permeability. She simply will not survive stagnant water and will quickly rot. For these purposes, it is good to use such a soil mixture:

• sod land - 3 parts;
• leafy soil - 2 parts;
• peat and sand - in one part.

When to replant a purchased plant?

All poinsettiastore bought need soil replacement as they grow in so-called transport soil. It is not intended for long-term cultivation, because it does not contain nutrients - in the store, flowers are "fed" by fertilizing them with fertilizers.

However, it is impossible to transplant the plant immediately after purchase - you need to give it time to adapt to new conditions. In general, this will take 3 to 4 weeks.

If it is not possible to transplant poinsettia, you will have to continue the “store” care after it, feeding it with potassium-phosphorus fertilizers so that the plant does not disappear.

When to transplant an adult poinsettia?

The next plant transplant should be done every year after the dormant period ends and the bush starts growing. This will be evidenced by the appearance of young leaves on the branches. The optimal time for a transplant is from April to May.

A feature of the annual transplant of poinsettia is that it is best carried out by the transfer method, without freeing the root system from the old substrate. This will help keep the delicate roots intact.

The flower pot should not be too spacious - it is enough if its diameter is 3 cm larger. Fresh soil just needs to be filled up to the desired level, filling the space formed between the installed bush and the walls of the flowerpot.
