What are polyanthus roses?

I was visiting a friend in the summer and saw there a gorgeous border of low rose bushes covered with small roses. Tell us what polyanthus roses are, and do they have any peculiarities?

Polyanthus roses are a hybrid variety obtained from crossing two types of roses - Chinese tea and dwarf Japanese. The first seedlings appeared at the end of the 19th century thanks to the Frenchman Jean Baptiste Guillot and have not lost their popularity since then. What is so special about polyanthus roses that flower growers love them so much?

Features of the variety

polyanthus roses

Translated from Greek, the name of the variety means "multi-flowered", and this is the whole point. Small, on average 50 cm in height, bushes, with the beginning of the flowering period, are abundantly covered with small roses, and one inflorescence can have up to 50 flowers. Small roses have a maximum diameter of 6 cm, their color range is not very large, but quite bright, like Chinese roses. And the rich green color of a dense deciduous mass, polyanthus roses were taken from Japanese varieties.

A feature of the variety is not only abundant, but also very long flowering. Starting from mid-June, inflorescences appear on all young shoots, and this beauty does not stop until late autumn.

Unlike most varieties, polyanthus roses practically do not have thorns on the shoots.

This variety of rose bushes has another advantage - even in harsh winter conditions with high frosts, roses tolerate wintering well in the presence of shelter. And if the plants freeze, they quickly recover and start new shoots from the root. In addition, roses:

  • resistant to fungal diseases;
  • able to grow in too wet soil;
  • have good survival rate, especially when rooting by cuttings.
