Tell me when to plant thuja? I love conifers very much and have already tried to breed them last year. I bought seedlings and planted them in October, as the seller advised. However, out of five pieces, not one took root, however, the first frosts hit us early. Maybe I planted them too late and it is better to do it in the spring?

Many gardeners prefer evergreen crops such as thuja. They are less whimsical and decorate the site not only in season, but also in winter. And they are also distinguished by high winter hardiness, which allows them to be grown in any region. Despite this, often conifers are faced with the problem of survival of young specimens. In general, thuja tolerate planting and possible subsequent transplants well. However, like other plants, young seedlings need time to grow stronger before the onset of cold weather. It is on when to plant thuja that their further development and healthy appearance depend, however, and on the right place.

Planting thujas, like other conifers, can be carried out in two periods: in spring or autumn. Each of them has its own rules and recommendations, but they have the same essence - to carry out planting work on time. Too early spring planting will lead to the fact that young seedlings will "freeze" in the cold ground and will not take root. In addition, they can suffer from recurrent frost. Thuja planted in late spring will suffer from a lack of moisture and high temperatures. It is equally important to have time to carry out planting work in the fall, otherwise conifers will not have time to get stronger before frost.

When to plant thuja: approximate planting dates

There is no exact date for planting thujas, because the climate of the growing region plays a decisive role in this matter. Considering how early spring comes and when a cold snap sets in in autumn, the following dates for planting conifers are distinguished:

1. Spring - not earlier than March. By this time, the snow should melt and the ground should warm up. In the central zone and to the north, it is worth waiting until April, but no more. Late planting will reduce the survival rate of thuja: when it is warm, the seedlings begin to ache.
2. Autumn - no later than October for the south and September for the northern latitudes. The trees must have time to root in order to survive their first wintering safely.

If the summer is not very hot, you can plant thuja in August. But in this case, you should pay special attention to regular watering.

Where is it better to plant thuja

When choosing a place for evergreen thuja, you should give preference to a semi-shaded area. In full shade, the trees will not be able to boast of a lush crown, but if they are constantly in the sun, they risk getting burns. In addition, plants growing on the sunny side winter worse, like those planted in a draft. But with regard to soil moisture, you don't have to worry too much. Unlike most horticultural crops, thuja thrive in places where groundwater is close.
