A monumental, lush plant with large leaves and a cap of small sunny flowers is a buzulnik. Its appearance is decorated with carved succulent leaves of bright color. Each variety has a different shape. Flowers of various varieties also differ. Some types and varieties of buzulnik are suitable only for growing in natural conditions, others are successfully cultivated at home.
The flower is classified as a perennial crop. He comes from the Astrov family. Another name is ligularia. The leaves reach a height of 80 - 90 cm, and the inflorescences rise above the bush at a height of up to two meters. Ligularia is a thermophilic crop, and only a few varieties are adapted to cold climates.
Popular types and varieties of buzulnik
In the natural environment, there are about 150 different plant names. Up to 20 species have been cultivated. In our climatic conditions, several types of toothed buzulnik and Przhevalsky take root well. Let's consider the features of the most popular and beautiful varieties in more detail.
Toothed
The most popular subspecies of dentate ligularia are the following:
- Desdemona;
- Othello;
- Marie Crawford;
- Osiris.
The plant begins to bloom in mid-summer. Flowers fall in early autumn.
Desdemona cultivar
Magnificent in its external data, the toothed Buzulnik Desdemona, whose photo is presented below, is liked by many gardeners. Picturesque wavy leaves with double color grow in a lush cap on lawnattracting attention. The plate is colored violet-brown below, dark green above. The buds open in August. They have pointed yellow petals with a dark center. The height of the bush is no more than 90 cm.

Othello variety
A distinctive feature of Othello is spreading leaves, reaching a size of about 40 - 50 cm. The plant looks beautiful on the shore of an artificial pool and a natural pond. The color of leaves inherent in serrated ligularia becomes especially bright closer to autumn. Buzulnik Othello, photos of flowers of which are collected in a separate gallery below, blooms at the end of August. Flowering lasts a little over a month.
The petals of small flowers of the Othello variety are bright yellow in color.
Osiris cultivar
Buzulnik Osiris is the smallest and most charming subspecies of serrated ligularia. It is planted in a flower bed in a row of medium plants. The height of the bush reaches no more than half a meter. Osiris perfectly coexists with other perennials, for example, phlox or New Belgian asters. All summer it is dazzling with rich green leaves, and by mid-July it blooms with small lemon "stars". The flowering period is approximately 40 days.
Marie Crawford variety
Bozulnik Marie Crawford (photo of varietal plants in the garden design below) is distinguished by the original color of the leaves. They combine several shades at once: from purple to brown, from marsh to malachite. A spreading bush with large leaves grows about a meter in height. The flowers rise like a cap of fire over the leaves from August to September.

Wilson's variety
A majestic shrub with powerful carved leaves, well suited for planting in the park. Malachite greens grow in the root zone. The height of the culture during flowering reaches 150 cm. During this period, Wilson's buzulnik releases panicles with yellow baskets. Their diameter is only 2 - 2.5 cm. Flowering begins in July and continues until the end of summer.
Ligularia Wilsoniana is better adapted to hot climates than any other species and tolerates dry summers.
Buzulnik Vicha
A decorative look to the culture is given by solid basal leaves growing in a single bush. Ligularia Veitchiana is a vigorous plant that grows up to two meters in height. During flowering, it throws out large spikelets topped with small yellow flowers. Buzulnik Vich blooms for a short period: from late August to early September.
Looks beautiful when single planting on the lawn, in the vicinity of varietal grasses in the park and garden. In winter, it does not require shelter, it tolerates bad weather well.
Ligularia Vorobyov
Another grandiose representative of the Astrov family. A powerful bush grows up to one and a half meters wide, while its height is sometimes higher than two meters. In case of rainy enough weather, the rounded thick leaves of the Far Eastern plant grow up to 50 cm in length. The culture flourishes quite late. Dark leathery stems appear in late August and bloom in small yellow flowers until late September. This species tolerates winter well, it is adapted to harsh climatic conditions.
Siberian
Buzulnik Siberian is a large representative of the species. It grows up to a meter in height. The leaves of a dark green hue are heart-shaped, tough and leathery to the touch. The plant tolerates drought well, is frost-resistant, has high immunity against various diseases. Dark arrows, pubescent with reddish leaves, the plant releases by August. It blooms for a short time with beautiful mustard yellow holly flowers.
Buzulnik Tangutsky
Ligularia tangutica, Tangut synakalia or Tangutsky buzulnik - all these are the names of the same large plant of the Astrov family. It differs from other representatives of the species with curly carved basal leaves. Due to the aesthetic appearance and beauty of small panicles of yellow inflorescences, this species is cultivated in nurseries and botanical gardens. The homeland of the plant is China.
Tangut Buzulnik is a frequent visitor to parks and squares. It actively reproduces by layers, takes root well in a new place.
Fisher
Fischer's Buzulnik is distinguished by its unpretentiousness and resistance to bad weather. Grows in the vastness of Siberia, China and Japan. Particularly fond of bushes and wet forest partial shade. Inflorescences appear above the bright green bush in July. The height of the plant before flowering is about 50 cm, the size together with flowering arrows is about 140 - 150 cm. Small buds of yellow star-shaped flowers are collected in inflorescences.
The Rocket variety
Narrow-headed Buzulnik is the progenitor of the new Rocket variety, which was bred by selection. Buzulnik Rocket attracts gardeners with its delightful carved leaves, a bit like grape leaves. Their light green color changes to purple in autumn, especially pleasing to the eye. A tall crop grows up to two meters during flowering.

Gregynog Gold Hybrid
The hybrid Buzulnik Gregenog Gold was bred by crossing two varieties: Vich and Carved toothed. Thanks to successful selection, a tall ornamental plant appeared, topped with warm, sunny flowers. The bush grows compactly: at a height of up to 150 cm, the width is no more than 45 cm. The heart-shaped green mass is colored in a light shade of green with golden reflections. The culture grows well on moist soils, withstands partial shade. In winter, no additional maintenance is required.
Zepter hybrid
The hybrid Buzulnik Zepter is beautiful throughout the growing season. In spring, magnificent carved succulent leaves fill the flowerbed in the form of a spherical bush, and towards the end of summer bright yellow arrows swing above it. The height of the crop is about 130 cm. It is preferable to plant the Zepter cultivar in a shady place with sufficient moisture. Florists use this species as a central figure in a flower bed or as a tapeworm in flower groups in natural parks.
It is better to cover the zepter for the winter so that the tubers do not freeze.
General care instructions
Buzulnik (ligularia) is a strong, hardy plant. For good growth, he needs several factors:
- shaded landing site;
- distance from drafts;
- good humidity;
- fertile soil is preferable, but it can even grow on clay soils.
Buzulnik's favorite place is on the shore reservoir... It is saturated with moisture in a timely manner, blooms beautifully. At the same time, near the water, the plant looks the most poetic.
The unpretentious buzulnik differs in the size and height of the bush, the appearance of the inflorescences, the shape and diameter of the leaves. Among the many varieties, the most popular are hybrid and serrated.
