How long does it take to plant tulips in the fall in the ground? I bought rare varieties via the Internet, some super-terry ones, and also like peonies. One of these days a parcel should arrive, I have already prepared a flower bed. Can I plant them now or a little later? It's still very warm here, one might even say hot.

A characteristic feature of all bulbous crops is a pronounced dormant period - in winter they must rest in order to bloom again. It is for this reason that planting tulips in the fall in the ground is the most suitable way to breed them. Only after a cooling period do the bulbs accumulate useful substances necessary for their development, and especially for flowering. Tulips planted in fall will sprout and bloom earlier than those planted in spring.

In order for flowers to really give buds in the new season, buy only large planting material with a diameter of at least 4 cm. Smaller bulbs can only give leaves, and you will have to wait two years for the buds until they grow and get stronger.

When to plant tulips in autumn

Do not rush to plant so that the plants do not germinate in an Indian summer. But do not be late either, because tulips will also freeze in the frozen ground, without having time to take root. Tentatively, you can start planting no earlier than from the second half of September, when it gets colder, but there will be no frost yet. The most important thing is the temperature of the soil, which should cool, but not freeze.

Start planting when the soil has cooled to plus 10 ° C. Three weeks, and the heat in the ground, is enough for the bulbs to grow roots. But the aboveground part will not grow due to the cold weather.

Where to plant tulips

Tulips are among the first to bloom in flower beds, so make sure they have enough light. Set aside the sunniest flowerbed for these beauties, where there are no drafts. And be sure to inspect the area and study the soil - it doesn't have to be heavy. Do not plant in lowlands, water will stagnate there, and the bulbs will begin to hurt and rot.

Two weeks before planting, dig up the flower bed with the introduction of organic matter (ash or compost).

To prevent the bulbs from freezing in winter, do not plant them very shallowly. The optimum depth of the hole should be equal to the height of the bulb, multiplied by 3. It is not necessary to make the holes deeper for insurance purposes. This is quite enough to protect against freezing. Deeply buried tulips simply won't bloom.

Position the bulbs correctly - they should lie with their wide bottoms down.

There are several ways to plant tulips:

1. In rows in one line. Leave a 5-10 cm distance between each bulb.
2. In two or more rows. Keep a distance of at least 15 cm between rows.
3. Group holes. The curtains of 5 bulbs look beautiful and do not interfere with each other: 4 - at the edges and one - in the center of the hole.

Alternatively, you can plant tulips in special baskets for planting bulbs. They are sold in every flower shop.

This method is very convenient, because after flowering, the bulbs can easily be taken out with the basket and taken for storage.
