Fertilizers for Phalaenopsis orchids

I got the Phalaenopsis orchid. It bloomed all winter, and by summer the leaves began to dry out. Tell me, what fertilizers can you bring an orchid back to life?

The Phalaenopsis orchid attracts the attention of flower growers, first of all, because its flowering period lasts up to six months. Of course, the plant will delight with a flowering look with proper care, which includes the competent introduction of fertilization. After all, fertilizer will be beneficial only if it is applied during the period of flower growth. When the orchid is in a dormant period, it can even be dangerous and lead to its death.

General requirements for fertilizers for orchids

phalaenopsis orchids For feeding orchids, fertilizers are best in liquid form, allowing them to be distributed throughout the soil in the pot. On the container with fertilizer it says - “For orchids”.

Universal complex fertilizers are also often used. However, it should be borne in mind that when they are introduced, the recommended dose must be reduced by 3 times in order to prevent scalding of the plant roots. For the same reason, top dressing should be chosen with a low acidity level.

The most essential elements for the active development of an orchid are phosphorus, potassium and nitrogen. Depending on the stage of development and growth of phalaenopsis, their different concentration is used:

  • during the growth period, preference is given to fertilizers with a high nitrogen content;
  • phosphorus and potassium are required to form buds;
  • young orchids for normal development need feeding with a predominance phosphorus;
  • phosphorus is also used to provide bright and lush colors.

Orchids can be fertilized in two ways: root feeding and foliar feeding.

Phalaenopsis root feeding

root feeding

Root dressing is applied only to absolutely healthy orchids... But here, you should adhere to certain rules:

  1. Top dressing is not carried out during the dormant period and after the flower transplant.
  2. It is better not to subject diseased plants to root feeding.
  3. To keep the flowering period from shortening, you cannot fertilize the orchid during the flowering period.

Before applying top dressing, it is necessary to moisten the roots well by watering the plant.

Dissolve the fertilizer in lukewarm water in the proportion indicated on the package. Pour the prepared liquid into a small bowl - so that the flowerpot fits there. Put the pot with the orchid in a bowl for 20 minutes, and pour a little with the same solution on top. After the recommended time has elapsed, pull out the flowerpot and leave excess water to glass.

fertilizer master color

Among the root fertilizers, the most effective are Master-color universal (for the development of leaves and roots), Master-color Orchid (promotes the setting of flower stalks), Pocon (increases disease resistance), Greenworld (increases the flowering period).

Foliar application of fertilizers

Foliar dressing is used during the growth of the root system, with damage to the root system, as well as with chlorosis. Foliar top dressing is recommended in cloudy weather so that the leaves do not get burned by the sun.

Root and foliar feeding should be carried out in turn, but in no case at the same time.

Dr. Foley
