Secrets of agricultural technology - how to plant a small garden, with darkening and poor drainage system
In order to determine the vegetables that can be planted in the garden, it is necessary to answer a few general questions:
- How much time can you spend caring for your garden?
- What vegetables and berries does your family eat?
- How many vegetables (at least approximately) do you need?
- Is there storage space for the crop?
- Can you provide adequate watering for moisture-loving plants?
- How knowledgeable are you in the agricultural industry?
In addition to these questions, there are also no less important criteria for deciding which crops to plant on the site.
- Direction and location of the existing area, as well as its illumination.
- The presence or absence of tall hedges around the garden and shaded areas.
- Soil quality and drainage properties.
- Climatic features of the region, i.e. what is the length of summer and the number of sunny days.
Of course, this list can be significantly expanded, but let's dwell on specific examples and the most common problems.
Lightness or what to plant in the garden with shading
Important! Almost all vegetable plants are not as whimsical to light as, for example, fruit trees. For many of them, sunlight from noon to sunset is sufficient.
Cucumbers, beans, carrots, garlic, and beets are well tolerated not too thick, diffused shade. Some flowers and ornamental plants feel great in such conditions: various ferns, violet, peony (Caucasian, Wittmann), Kupena, lily of the valley.
The most sun-loving vegetables are tomatoes, eggplants, melon, pepper, watermelon, potatoes.
Size matters
Advice! To make the most of a small plot of land, beds with perennial onions and herbs can be set up in the near-stem circles next to the young trees. For this, the garden bed is fenced off around the tree and covered with prepared soil.
If the area of the garden is sufficient (8–12 m² or more), you can plant anything on the plot, checking only the climate, your desire and capabilities.
But what if the site is small? Owners of small gardens should pay attention to the technology of mixed plantings.
The principle of this method is simple: several crops are grown on one bed at once, one of which is the main one, and the rest, one might say, are satellites. Mixed planting provides a more rational use of the area, in which the soil is less depleted, and the accompanying and main plants have a beneficial effect and protect each other from diseases and parasites.
When using this method, compact, short, fast growing and maturing plants (compactors) are planted between the rows of the main crop. By the time more space is required for the main crop, the growing season of satellite plants will have ended, and nothing will interfere with the further development of the remaining vegetable.
As seals, you can plant on the site: oregano, basil, dill, garlic, parsley, horseradish, tarragon.
Recommendations:
- potatoes, beans, beets and tomatoes go well with spinach and basil;
- plant cucumbers and cabbage next to dill;
- radish planted nearby has a beneficial effect on almost all vegetables.
Which plants should not be planted nearby?
- Peas and onions;
- carrots and tomatoes with dill;
- sage and onions;
- cabbage and garlic;
- potatoes and cucumbers.
What to plant in a garden with a poor drainage system?
Advice! If possible, try not to plant a vegetable garden in areas with poor drainage. An excess of moisture leads to the appearance of phytophthora, rot, and also significantly reduces the yield.
If the soil is very wet, then it is best to install a deep, storm or vertical drainage system. No possibility? Then we select plants.
It is worth noting that there are no garden crops that like very moist soil throughout the growing season. There are plants that tolerate moderately high moisture (the water standing between the beds does not suit anyone), but provided there is good sunlight for at least 10 hours a day, these include cucumbers and zucchini. And yet, in such areas, it is better to arrange a flower garden, for disembarkation are suitable: Volzhanka, swimsuit, forget-me-not, zubyanka, bergamo, marsh gladiolus, primrose.
