Two ways of propagation of aglaonema by cuttings

propagation of aglaonema by cuttings One of the easiest and fastest ways Aglaonem breeding is their grafting. Most often, the reproduction of the plant is carried out in parallel with its "pruning", that is, when the shoots on the bush break off in order to stimulate the emergence of new branches and give the aglaonema a magnificent appearance.

Aglaonema can be propagated by cuttings all year round, but cuttings take root faster in the spring.

There are two ways to get a new plant from cuttings:

  • using the tops of the shoots;
  • using the stem itself.

If you need to get a new plant faster, it is better to use the tops - they take root faster than stem cuttings.

Rooting of apical shoots

Cut off young tops, leaving a height of 10 cm, and put them on paper overnight to dry. There are two ways to root the tops:

  • putting them in a container with settled water;
  • immediately planting in a small pot of nutrient soil.

If the top is rooted in the soil, its leaves should be tied in a bunch to slow down the evaporation of moisture. In addition, it is necessary to provide the plant with greenhouse conditions - cover it with a cut-off bottle or place the flowerpot in a bag.

When the top takes root and begins to release young shoots, the shelter is removed and over time the plant is transferred to a permanent pot.

Stem cuttings

Bare shoots left over after pruning a plant is an excellent material for reproduction of aglaonema, because they have many dormant buds. To stimulate awakening, it is necessary to cut the stem into cuttings from 5 to 10 cm long.Further, they are placed to choose from:

  • into a glass of water, giving the handle an upright position;
  • immediately in a pot with nutritious soil, laying the stalk lying down and sprinkling it with earth a little.

All sections must be powdered with charcoal and allowed to dry.

Roots will form on the stem at the same time and young shoots will sprout. If you put the cuttings in the soil, young branches will sprout at the very base of the earth.

If there is a leaf on a piece of the stem, rooting will take place faster.

Stem cuttings rooted in water are planted in a nutritious substrate, one cuttings in each pot, and placed on a windowsill with good but diffused lighting. The first transshipment of young plants should be done no earlier than when the roots are wrapped around a clod of earth.

    Can you please tell me if it is possible to re-root to multiply aglaonema with such growth as in the photo, if so, tell me how best to do it

    • Olga

      Unfortunately, the photo was not attached. Please try again or clarify the question.

    how long does it take for the roots to appear when rooting in water

  3. Olga

    It all depends on which part of the plant you are using. The top usually sprouts in 10 days. The stem stalk may stand longer. Treatment with a growth stimulant will accelerate root formation.

    Good day! My aglaonema is over 12 years old. There are 3 roots in the pot, the bush looks very beautiful. But I never cut it off, and over the years the stem has stretched out, bare and looks like the letter N - up, down and up again, and at the end there are leaves. I want to renew the flower, but I'm afraid to ruin it. How to cut it correctly so as not to harm the plant?

    • Olga

      It would be desirable to see the photo. But, if it really is like the letter N, then I would cut off as soon as your "letter" goes down. And the remaining wavy part would be divided into even cuttings. They can be rooted and new plants can be obtained.

    As for the aglaonema. The first time the stem rises upwards by 50 cm. If you cut it off as soon as it goes down, three bare stems of 50 cm each will stick out. Is it possible to cut it off below, leave 15-20 centimeters from the ground? And yet, when the stem goes up a second time, leaves grow on this part. Where should these deciduous parts be cut off and how best to root - in water or in the ground?

    • Olga

      Of course, it is not at all necessary to leave the 50-centimeter stumps. Can be cut shorter, and even at different heights. When these shoots sprout branches, you get a pretty multilevel bush. As for the branches with leaves, then I would take the most even part of the top of the shoots. You can root both in water and in soil, just do not forget to change the water if you choose the first method. And when the roots appear, transplant the processes into pots.
