How to make carrot and onion beds in the garden?
I would like to congratulate right away on an extremely successful choice. Yes, carrots and onions are not always planted together by chance. There are several reasons for this. First, onions release allicin, a special substance that helps repel parasites that are dangerous to carrots. Secondly, the bulbs are always on the surface of the ground, and the carrots are much deeper. Therefore, these two crops will not interfere with each other, receiving nutrients from different layers of the earth. But, of course, it is not enough to make the right choice. You also need to know how to make beds in the garden for carrots and onions in order to get a rich harvest.
Garden bed formation
The formation of a bed should begin by determining its size. The optimal width is 0.7-1.2 meters. If the width is made smaller, then you will have to arrange too many beds - you will not be able to get a large harvest from one. If the bed is wider, then there will be problems with watering, removing weeds. The length can be almost any - it is limited only by the size of the site and your wishes.
It is advisable to arrange a small embankment or even install slats along the edges of the bed. The desired height is 10-12 centimeters. This will conserve water by ensuring good watering even after a little rain.
But if the site is located in a lowland, another question arises - how to get rid of excess water. To do this, the garden bed is specially raised - a formwork is installed from a board with a height of 20-30, which is filled with earth. Thanks to this, excess moisture will quickly leave the garden.
Worst of all, if the garden has to be broken up on swampy soil - any root crops here begin to rot quickly. You have to remove part of the land from the garden to get a pit about 25-35 centimeters deep. Thick and durable construction polyethylene is laid on the bottom and walls. Only after this does the soil return to its place. This will protect it from groundwater approaching the surface and get a rich harvest.
Don't forget about fertilizers
The next step to get a rich harvest is to fertilize the soil. You can use chemical fertilizers, but in this case, read the instructions very carefully and follow it - any violations can cause the death of plants and even get fruits that are dangerous to health.
You can also use organic matter - onions and carrots are perfectly fertilized with manure, compost or peat. In this case, it will be much more difficult to harm the fertilizer.
Landing
Onion sets (when and how to plant in open ground) it is advisable to take a fresh one that has lain for six months or at most one and a half. To plant it, draw stripes on the bed (preferably around the perimeter) and just gently press the seeds into the ground so that only the top of the head sticks out.
The carrots are planted in the center of the garden. Its seeds are very small, so you have to thin out too many seedlings, wasting extra time.Some people glue the seeds onto paper on purpose, which they then gently roll over the beds. But it will be easier to mix the seeds with ordinary river sand or dry soil, and then sow in the prepared holes. Then a relatively small amount of seeds will fall into the ground, and young shoots will not have to be thinned out.
