How to tie up gladioli - practical advice from experienced gardeners

Tell me how to tie up gladioli? I bought new varieties from hands on the market, taking my grandmothers at their word. They turned out to be tall, more than 1.5 m. In the summer we had a strong downpour with the wind, so half of the flowers broke, even the pegs that I put near each bulb did not help. Or maybe they were just short, because the total length was 1 m, and even then part of it was buried in the ground. What other ways of garter are there?

Gardeners who grow gorgeous handsome gladioli must have faced the problem that they break. Therefore, one of the important measures for flower care is knowing how to tie gladioli. Strong winds, prolonged rains that eroded the soil, or too heavy large inflorescences - all this can cause the stem to bend. As a result, not only the appearance of the flower, which has lost its proud posture, suffers. After such an injury, half of the buds often do not have time to bloom on the peduncle, or even more.

How to tie gladioli - simple ways to protect flowers

The easiest method is to place a peg near each bulb. As the aerial part grows, it will only be necessary to gradually tie it. There are some more interesting ways:

1. Eight. Suitable only for gladioli planted in a row. At the beginning and end of the row, set pegs about 1 m high. Fasten the first with a twine and, moving to the end of the row, wrap a snake around each flower. Having reached the final peg, wrap the twine around it and return to the beginning in the same way. As you grow, just lift the twine up.
2. Grid. The ideal solution for a whole flower bed of gladioli that grow "heap". Install supports around the perimeter or make a frame of wooden blocks and cover everything with a special plastic net. It should be with large cells 10 by 10 cm. Gladiolus shooters will find their cell by themselves, you will only need to periodically look and guide them.
3. The grid is a support. The principle is simple: install a net behind the flowers, this time more durable, metal, and tie gladioli to it.
4. Decorative round fence. For its manufacture, you will need PVC pipes and slats. Shape the pipe into a circle, attach slats and install on the flower bed. It is convenient to use such fences to fence off gladioli planted in small groups.
5. Trellis. Also a convenient garter - a support for flowers growing in a row. Pull the wire on both sides of the row so that the gladioli are inside.
6. Group garter. Plant the bulbs in a circle with a long support in the center. Grown up gladioli just tie everything together around her.

The influence of planting depth on the need for garter flowers

The method of planting gladioli, namely, in what soil and how deeply the bulbs were buried. But it is also impossible to bury the flowers strongly, especially if the soil is heavy. On the one hand, the clay soil itself will reliably cover the bulbs and fix them so that heavy inflorescences do not fall. However, if you get carried away and deeply deepen them, flowering may not be at all. Gladioli will only grow foliage, and they will no longer have the strength to form a flower arrow.

The maximum planting depth in heavy soil should not exceed 3 diameters of the planting material.

The opposite is true for light sandy soil. The smaller the hole, the easier it will be for the wind to pull out the flower. In this case, the planting depth increases to an indicator equal to 4 diameters. For short and medium-sized gladioli, such a landing will be enough so as not to tie them up. The need for a garter for tall varieties depends on the growing location. On a flower bed, where the wind often walks, you cannot do without it, even a deep planting will not help.
