Colorful clematis of the second pruning group grow in the country - description and photos of popular varieties

clematis of the second pruning group Large buds, simple or double, of delicate light colors or rich colors - which of us does not like handsome clematis? Among the varieties of this creeping shrub vine, it is worth noting clematis the second group of pruning, a photo and description of the varieties of which will be presented below: for the most part, these are hybrids, surprising with their shapes and colors. What is the secret of their popularity, and what they are, this will be discussed today.

Group characteristics

pruning clematis of the second pruning group

A distinctive feature of clematis is the ability to form buds both on last year's growth and on young lashes, while in most species this division does not affect the quality of flowering, but requires a special approach to the formation of a bush. This is especially important for varieties that have two flowering periods: for them, first the appearance of buds on last year's branches, and then, with a short break, on a young growth is characteristic. Some hybrids do not have such a distinction in time and bloom continuously, smoothly moving from old branches to annuals, while others are distinguished by longer and more abundant flowering in the second run.

To maintain a neat plant look and flower size, light pruning should be done annually and regularly. It is done twice a season:

  • in the summer, after the first wave of flowering, cut off the faded part of last year's branches, or cut them out completely if the bush is too thick;
  • in the fall, after the second wave of flowering, the faded young lashes are shortened by ¼, leaving no more than 1.5 m.

It goes without saying that all sick, twisted and growing branches inside the bush are subject to mandatory complete removal.

Today there is a huge variety of varieties of clematis of the second group and sometimes it is very difficult to make a choice in favor of one or another species: one hybrid is striking in its size, the second "takes" with double buds, and the third - with an amazing color. We tried to collect for you the most beautiful varieties of clematis, which have earned recognition and love not only from gardeners, but also in the "professional field", and we hasten to introduce them to you. So, let's begin.

Terry varieties

What could be more beautiful than a huge stuffed bud, consisting of many petals, rounded or pointed, straight or wavy, delicate or rich colors? Among the terry clematis, there are both early flowering and late varieties. An interesting feature of this group is that some species retain the double shape of flowers throughout the entire flowering, both on old and new shoots, while in others, stuffed inflorescences bloom only on last year's growth, and young lashes will delight a maximum of semi-double, or even simple flowers. Admire the photo and read the description of the double and semi-double varieties of clematis of the second pruning group.

Clematis Red Star

clematis red starOne of the bright double hybrids with large crimson-red inflorescences, although semi-double variants of the plant can also be found. The petals are slightly wavy, pointed. The maximum height of the bush is 2 m, it does not grow very quickly, the lashes are well attached to the support and crawl along it.

The variety is early flowering, and blooms in two waves at last year's and current growth alternately:

  • from mid-May to June;
  • from August to September.

Clematis Red Star is still a beginner among gardeners, but every year it gains more and more fans due to its gorgeous flowering and good frost resistance.

Clematis Innocent Blush

clematis Innocent BlushThe bush has a rather modest size (the liana grows no more than 2 m in height), but the variety is famous for its flowers. They are very large, up to 18 cm in diameter, have a color rarely found among clematis: light pink petals along the edge and in the middle are painted in a darker, pearl pink color. Clematis is characterized by the presence of two forms of inflorescences at once:

  • on last year's growth, the largest double flowers bloom, while their petals, as they approach the center, become smaller and smaller than they resemble a peony;
  • smaller and simpler inflorescences of six slightly wavy petals bloom on young twigs.

Clematis blooms early, in May, and repeats flowering again in autumn, but not so abundant.

The bush is subject to weak pruning with shortening of the shoots in spring to 75 cm. It winters well, but in especially frosty winters it freezes without shelter.

Clematis Innocent Glance

clematis Innocent GlanceAnother large-flowered early flowering variety with small lianas and good winter hardiness. Just like the Innocent Blash variety, the height of the bush is about 2 m, in May large double inflorescences bloom on old branches on it, and in July, on a young growth, there are already simple or semi-double buds. Perhaps this is where the similarity of the varieties ends:

  • in contrast to Blush's light coloration, Glans is a more saturated color, although it remains within pink tones with a darker border around the edge of the petals;
  • the petals themselves are elliptical with a sharp tip, while Blush's are rounded.

Clematis Blue Explosion

Clematis Blue ExploitedOne of the new Polish varieties (aka Blue Burst), obtained in 2011, is distinguished by large inflorescences of a deep blue color, while the tips of the petals are painted pink. Early, in the month of May, thick double flowers bloom on old branches, in summer, simple buds on young shoots.

The shrub needs support and can rise up to 3 m in height. It hibernates well, subject to weak pruning.

Clematis Blue Light

Clematis Blue LightAn equally spectacular variety of blue clematis, however, grows a little less Explosive (up to 2 m in height), besides, the doubleness of its petals, in contrast to the named variety, remains throughout the entire flowering period. And the vine blooms early, in two sets (from May to June and from August to October), both on young and old branches, so pruning should be done lightly. The buds themselves are large, up to 15 cm in diameter, with pointed narrow petals.

Clematis Piilu

Clematis PiiluThe Estonian hybrid from the Viticella group attracts attention with its large size and delicate color of flowers: they are pink-purple in color, with a dark, almost crimson, strip along the petal, and yellow fluffy stamens protrude from the center of the bud.

Clematis blooms in two periods, almost without interruption:

  • in the month of May, the stuffed buds on last year's branches are the first to open;
  • at the end of July, simple, but also very beautiful and large flowers bloom on a young growth.

The description of clematis Piilu would not be complete without mentioning the size of the vine itself: its maximum height is 1.5 m, so the plant is often grown in pots on balconies.

Clematis Veronica Choice

Clematis Veronica ChoiceA shrub liana up to 3 m in height, at the beginning of summer on old branches it opens large double flowers in the form of pompons of a delicate, purple-white, color. But in August, on a young growth, already simple flowers bloom, while maintaining the original color. The variety is resistant to low temperatures, has quite compact dimensions - the height of the bush does not exceed 2.5 m, it weaves well along the support.

Clematis Kiri Te Kanava

Clematis Kiri Te KanavaOne of those varieties that retain the doubleness of the buds throughout the entire flowering.The inflorescences are large enough, consisting of many dark blue petals with a slightly pointed and wavy edge, contrasting yellow stamens are clearly visible in the center.

The continuous flowering of clematis lasts for a month and takes place in two waves:

  • May (last year's branches);
  • August (young shoots).

The variety is appreciated for the ability to use beautiful cut buds and for its high winter hardiness.

Clematis Andromeda

clematis andromedaA sufficiently high liana can stretch up to 3 m, it weaves well along the support, the growth rate is average. Differs in a two-tone color of inflorescences and two waves of flowering:

  • in May, semi-double, large (up to 16 cm in diameter) white inflorescences with a wide bright crimson strip along the petals and yellow stamens bloom on old branches;
  • in September, simple flowers with the same color bloom on a young growth.

It is better to plant clematis in partial shade - in the sun, delicate buds fade quickly, and the flowering time is reduced.

Clematis Kaiser

clematis KaiserOne of the smallest clematis, it grows up to a maximum of 1.5 m in height. It “takes” not in size, but in flowering: rather large inflorescences (14 cm in diameter) almost completely cover the liana, hiding foliage underneath. Double flowers are painted in a bright pink-purple color, have an interesting structure:

  • the extreme row consists of large, wide petals, rounded at the tips;
  • inner petals are narrow, while the closer to the middle, the narrower, up to the needle-like.

Kaiser blooms early, already in May, but not for long, only two months, and in the cold spring the middle of the flower turns green.

Clematis Asao

clematis AsaoLiana up to 3 m high is simply created for vertical gardening, especially in semi-shady places near the wall of a house, a fence, as well as for gazebos, the only thing that it grows is moderate. However, this is not so important, since clematis blooms on both young and old branches.

Asao blooms in two waves:

  • first, in May, large (up to 20 cm) semi-double flowers of last year's growth bloom;
  • at the end of July - at the beginning of August, smaller and already simple inflorescences appear at the current growth.

The color of the flowers is very delicate: in the center of the pink wide petals there are white stripes with a pinkish mesh, and yellow stamens complement the spectacular palette of colors.

Clematis Mazuri

clematis MazurySmall, maximum 3 m in height, the bush will surprise you with very large double inflorescences, painted in blue, with barely noticeable greenish spots around the outer circumference of the petals. The variety is relatively new and late blooming: buds up to 20 cm in diameter bloom only in June, but decorate the plant until September. It is interesting that at first the petals are tightly collected, making the flower look like a skillful origami craft, but by the time the inflorescence fades and withers, the petals open and the flower itself becomes as if loose.

The variety has high frost resistance.

Clematis May Darling

clematis my darlingThe novelty of Polish breeders will delight you with large double inflorescences up to 23 cm in diameter. The maximum doubleness is visible at the first flowering, which occurs late, in June, the second wave at the end of summer is already semi-double. But the bright color of the buds remains throughout the entire flowering: they are purple-red, with a pink stripe along the petal and an uneven lighter edge. The shape of the buds resembles the Innocent Blush variety - towards the center of the flower, the petals become gradually shorter and smaller.

The bush has a rather modest size, from 1.5 to 2 m, which allows it to be grown in tubs and containers.

Types of vines with a simple structure of inflorescences

Clematis varieties of the second pruning group, the description and photos of which are presented below, do not have as many petals as terry clematis. Most hybrids have 6 or 8 of them, but they are very large and wide, thanks to which simple clematis are no less effective, for example, like these varieties.

Clematis Mrs. Chelmondely

clematis Mrs chelmondelyThe variety is distinguished by long and abundant flowering.In addition, its inflorescences are just very large, up to 25 cm in diameter, painted in bright blue with a slight touch of lilac. The liana itself grows up to 3 m in height.

The shape of the inflorescences and the flowering time depend on the type of pruning. In general, the variety belongs to the second pruning group and can form buds both in the last year and in the current growth. If you cut the liana weakly, then semi-double buds will open on the old branches in May, and flowering will end in August. With strong pruning, the flowers will be simple, but large, and flowering will come only in July and will last until September.

Clematis Little Mermaid

clematis little mermaidJapanese hybrid with a unique and rather rare color: large, about 12 cm in diameter, inflorescences consist of 8 wide salmon-colored petals (clean, without spots and stripes) with a velvet surface. Against their background, yellow fluffy anthers look very beautiful. As the color fades, the color gradually fades and turns into a pale pink. The flowers have an almost regular round shape, and they bloom in May on old lashes. A second wave of flowering on young growth occurs at the end of summer. On the shoots of last year, the buds may have more petals, due to which they become semi-double.

The variety can still be found under the name "The Little Mermaid".

The bush is quite compact, its height does not exceed 2 m. It winters well, but when grown in the middle lane it is better to cover the liana.

Clematis Sunset

clematis SunsetA moderately branching bush with its strong lashes up to 3 m long clings tightly to the support with leaf petioles and is simply created for vertical gardening. The inflorescences are large, single-row, with an interesting color: dark pink petals along the center have a wide red stripe, the stamens are of a contrasting yellow color.

The second name of the variety, or rather, its translation - Sunset.

Clematis blooms early, in May, and continues until the arrival of autumn. The buds bloom on both old and young branches, while not changing the color and shape of the flower.

Clematis Queen Jadwiga

Clematis Queen JadwigaThe bush grows up to a maximum of 2.5 m in height, clings well to the support with petioles on the leaves. Against the background of dark green foliage, large white inflorescences up to 16 cm in diameter look beautiful as a contrasting spot. From the description and in the photo of Clematis Queen Jadwiga, it can be seen that they are flat, with round, wide petals in one row, the edges are slightly wavy and a pronounced rib. The stamens themselves are white, and the tops are purple. At the end of May, buds bloom on old shoots, and in August - on young ones, so pruning is needed weak.

If spring is cold, light green stripes appear along the middle of the petals.

Clematis President

clematis PresidentQuite a compact variety from the Patens group, it grows to a maximum of 2.5 m, the growth rate is decent - up to 10 cm per night. Resistant to low temperatures and diseases. It is characterized by abundant flowering on old and young lashes in two waves:

  • from late May to late June;
  • from July to September.

The inflorescences are large (17 cm), painted in a rich, blue-violet color. The petals are wide, tapering at the tips, with a darker or lighter strip in the center, depending on the main shade of the flower. The stamens are also dark, red, but the filaments are pinkish.

The variety got its name in honor of the president of the British gardening association, and was bred at the beginning of the 19th century.

Clematis Westerplatte

clematis wester platteGorgeous variety, noble color of inflorescences: they are dark red, with velvety, wide and rounded petals in one row and stamens of the same color. Depending on the growing climate, a lighter stripe may appear in the center.

It blooms early, in June, on last year's branches, after a short break, switching to a young growth, and pleases with its appearance until the end of August. The bush itself is compact, no more than 2 m in height.

Clematis Tudor

clematis tudorAn absolutely unpretentious variety, it grows and blooms equally well both in the sun and in partial shade.The bush grows up to a maximum of 2 m in height, weaves well along the support. It blooms from May until the end of summer in two sets, first on old, then on young lashes. The inflorescences fascinate with their simplicity and bright color: 6 large, wide petals with corrugated curling edges and blunt tips are painted in lilac color, but along the petal there is a bright crimson stripe. The diameter of each flower is about 12 cm, while the shape and size of the inflorescences are preserved throughout the entire flowering.

Clematis Solidarity

clematis SolidarityA very compact "baby clematis" from Polish breeders with a height of only 1.5 m will please with large bright red inflorescences up to 16 cm in diameter. Their petals seem to be velvet, with a barely visible strip in the middle, just a couple of shades lighter than the main tone.

Solidarity blooms early, already in May on overwintered branches, but blooms continuously until September, moving to a young growth.

The variety can be planted both in the sun and in partial shade.

As you have already seen, the second group of clematis can surprise even the most demanding gardeners. Well, let it take a little work around the climbing vine, but the result is worth it. Choose your favorite varieties and turn your yard into a flower garden. Good luck!
