The most beautiful and variegated autumn shrub with a surprise - warty euonymus

warty euonymus Not many deciduous shrubs can boast of such an amazing color as warty euonymus - a rather tall plant about 4 m high.Its uniqueness lies in the fact that in spring the bush does not stand out from other plants covered with green leaves. But with the arrival of autumn, the situation changes dramatically - from a nondescript bush, an euonymus turns into a blazing fire of different colors. There is another mystery in it, which can be seen during the flowering period.

What is the peculiarity of this type of euonymus? Let's deal with everything in order.

Characteristic features of the variety

Warty euonymus, despite its decent size, it has a very slow growth. The annual growth of the shrub is only 10 cm.But the shoots of the variety are very interesting:

  • while they are young, they are smooth and green;
  • old branches are already coarser, brown-gray in color, and growths that look like warts grow on their surface.

Thanks to these growths, the branches receive oxygen. In addition, it was they who gave the variety such a consonant name.

The crown of the bush is quite lush, in spring it is covered with small (up to 8 cm in length) leaves of a light green color. But already in September, the leaves begin to change color, painting at the same time in completely different tones - from the usual yellow to everyone, to pink and even dark purple. Thus, the euonymus acquires an original decorative appearance with all (or almost all) colors of the rainbow and becomes the main decoration of the garden.

Beautiful multi-colored leaves hang on the branches of the warty spindle tree until the very frost, in contrast to most plants, which at this time are already without foliage.

Features of flowering or beauty with a trick

Perhaps one of the most important differences of the variety is its flowering. Euonymus blooms in May 20 - long thin peduncles with small inflorescences of no more than 8 pieces each are formed on the branches. Their color is not very pleasant and not typical for inflorescences: purple spots are visible on a dirty green background. But it cannot be compared to the scent that comes from flowers. They secrete a sticky nectar that attracts flies, so the smell is not very attractive and looks like a mouse. For this reason, it is better to admire the beauty of the bush from afar.

After the end of flowering, small green boxes with four sides, slightly flattened, appear in place of the inflorescences. When they are fully ripe, they turn deep pink and burst. The cracked box remains hanging on the peduncle, and shiny black seeds, covered with a red shell, peep out of its middle. It looks no less amazing than the crown painted in bright colors.

Thanks to such unusual fruits, warty euonymus is also called "wolf earrings".

Since in nature the shrub grows in the forest, it is not whimsical at all and feels good in the home garden. The only thing to remember is that euonymus does not like overfilling, but otherwise it is quite easy to grow such an unusual beauty and will not pose any problems.
