Early crocuses are the first flowers in your garden

early crocuses There is no spectacle more charming than the bright spots of the first flowers on the lawns among the melting snow. Early crocuses are among the first to bloom. Having barely grown a couple of centimeters of delicate leafy feathers, they release a large flower. Against the background of a miniature bush, the crocus gramophones look simply gorgeous. White, blue, pinkish, lilac and even yellow - they have no competitors in the first days of spring. After all, other flowers at this time have not yet woken up and are only preparing to appear above the ground. By planting several different species, you will create a unique floral carpet among last year's leaves and the first young grass.

Early crocuses are the best varieties

Spring-flowering crocuses are usually divided into two groups, depending on the timing of flowering. Together with snowdrops, early flowering varieties are the very first to open their buds in March-April. Crocuses blooming in April-May are considered to be late.

Early flowering crocuses

These crocuses are among the first to bloom:

  1. Alatavsky. Peduncle up to 8 cm high is decorated with an original three-color bud. Its pharynx is yellow, the inside of the perianth is white, and the outside is dark purple. Blooms in early April.
  2. Geifel. Quite a tall variety with a peduncle up to 12 cm and a purple perianth. It blooms in early April.
  3. Korolkov. Striped crocus up to 6 cm high with orange flowers with purple stripes.

Late blooming crocuses

In late April - early May, more thermophilic late species bloom:

  1. Crocus Adams. On a peduncle only 6 cm long, a flower blooms up to 5 cm in diameter. The color is dominated by lilac-purple shades, while the pharynx itself is white-yellow. It blooms on the 20th of April.
  2. Spring crocus. One of the smallest species in height. Its peduncle can be only 1 cm in height, and a maximum of 3 cm, but the diameter of the perianth is about 4 cm. It blooms from the second half of April. Popular varieties: light lilac Agness, silver-blue Jubilee, white Jeanne D'Arc, dark purple with a red tint Paulus Potter.
  3. Crocus golden-flowered. Height 8 cm, blooms towards the end of April. The color depends on the variety: for Blue Bonnet it is yellow-blue, for Snowbanding it is white, for Cream Beauty it is yellow.

When to plant spring-blooming crocuses

In order for the bulbs to form a flower arrow, it is better to plant them before winter. Dig up in late August - early September garden bed and plant the bulbs.

It is not worth deeply deepening the bulbs - 2-3 cm is enough. Also mark the planting site so that you do not accidentally dig up crocuses during the autumn digging.

Crocuses are absolutely unpretentious in care. You don't need to dig them up for the winter like tulips. After the end of flowering, the aerial part dies off, and the bulbs remain in the ground until next spring. There they reproduce well, forming children. As a result, in a couple of years you will get a thick jacket. Crocuses grow in one place for 5-6 years. Then you will need to plant them, because there will be too many bulbs and they will become crowded.

So, to get really early crocuses, pay attention to the information on the bulb packaging.
