This is one of the oldest and time-tested species, grown practically throughout the entire territory of our homeland. And although it will not work to feast on his early apples, this is even for the best. Fruits ripening only by the middle of autumn are able to lie in storage until spring. And this is an important advantage, thanks to which you can provide seven natural vitamins for the whole winter.

The Bogatyr's parents are Antonovka, from which he received his winter hardiness, and Landsberg Ranet, who gave the brainchild a peculiar ribbed shape and excellent fruit taste. This is our native, domestic, variety, bred back in 1925 by the breeder Chernenko S.F.

Plant characteristic

The Bogatyr apple tree represents a group of late ripening, winter, varieties and grows into a fairly large tree. Its height can exceed 5 m, while the crown diameter is almost the same or even larger. The tree has a special structure: its skeletal branches grow almost perpendicular to the central trunk. And only from the second tier onwards, they are attached at sharper angles. The leaves of the apple tree are medium, dark green, elongated. The edges of the leaf plate have denticles and are slightly bent inward. A young tree begins to bear fruit 4 years after planting. Blooms in May with pinkish flowers. Moreover, they are flat and shallower than other varieties of the crop.

The variety is self-fertile and needs pollination. The best pollinators for the Bogatyr will be North Sinap, Spartan or Streifling.

The hero is distinguished by high immunity to scab, and also has a high winter hardiness. It is advisable to cover only young seedlings for the first couple of years. In the future, the trees winter well.

Taste and purpose of fruits

The variety is characterized by a high yield: up to 1 centner of apples can be harvested from an adult tree. They ripen in September, but it is advisable to wait with harvesting until the first decade of October. Then the apples will be sweeter and better stored. By the way, it is during storage that they gain the maximum sugar content. This happens in the month of December, and fruits can lie until April, because this is a table variety.

The fruits themselves are quite large, weighing about 150 g on average, but there are often specimens up to 200-300 g. Almost all of them are of the same size, rounded, wide at the base and ribbed. Smooth skin is light green at the stage of removal, turns yellow as it ripens. A blurry red blush appears on the sunny side of the apples.

The pulp is sweet and sour, moderately juicy, but pleasantly crispy, fine-grained. Bogatyr tastes sweeter than Antonovka and has a pleasant fruity aroma.

Pros and cons of the variety

The Bogatyr apple tree has many advantages, namely:

• it is resistant to one of the most dangerous diseases of the culture - scab, and other fungi;
• winters well and tolerates sudden changes in temperature;
• gives high yields annually;
• its fruits are homogeneous, tasty, stored for a long time and well transported.

However, the variety has some disadvantages. First of all, it is the need to plant pollinators in the neighborhood. And not everyone likes the color of the fruit. Many gardeners find it faded, especially in terms of implementation.
