Three ways of reproduction of dendrobium orchids

Tell me how the dendrobium orchid reproduces? I was presented with a very beautiful variety with raspberry inflorescences, so my sister has been asking for a “piece” for the second year already. Previously, my bush was young and not very large, but now it has grown, and I decided to disturb it, but I don’t know how to do it right so that my plant does not damage and the new one will take root successfully.

reproduction of dendrobium Dendrobium nobile orchid, as the full name of the flower sounds, is one of the most beautiful representatives of these epiphytic plants. It differs from Phalaenopsis in its appearance, since it does not have the wide leaves that are familiar to all, growing from the outlet, but forms powerful stems on which there are elongated leaves. The stems themselves have thickenings called pseudobulbs, from which new "shoots" or numerous inflorescences appear.

At home dendrobiums reproduce in three ways:

  • children (daughter rosettes) emerging from pseudobulbs that have not formed inflorescences;
  • cuttings, which can be obtained by cutting off "bald" old stems that have lost their leaves;
  • dividing an adult bush.

After the end of flowering, on the bulbs that have not tied the buds, with proper care, babies begin to form - they look like side branches, but with their own roots. For rooting to be successful, you need to give them time to grow the roots a little, and only then separate.

It is better to remove the baby from the mother's stem with your hands, carefully rolling it. If you can't tear it off, then you can cut it off with a knife.

All live sections must be dried and covered with charcoal. Root babies in pots with fine bark. When sprouts appear, transplant into the substrate.

How do I get cuttings?propagation by cuttings

Unsightly dendrobium stems can produce new orchids, cutting off the very soil and dividing into fragments about 15 cm long. In this case, each segment must have at least 3 nodules. The leaves must be removed, the cuttings dried and the sections processed as usual.

Cuttings should be rooted in zippers or transparent trays with lids filled with sphagnum, periodically airing. After the roots appear, transplant the dendrobiums into the substrate.

When can you share an orchid?reproduction by dividing the bush

Reproduction of dendrobium by dividing the bush can be combined with the next transplant of a flower, so as not to disturb it once again. To do this, carefully remove the orchid from the pot and free it from the old substrate. Using a sharp knife, cut the bush into several parts so that each division has several pseudobulbs and live stems.

Only adult dendrobium bushes at the age of 4 years can be divided, while they must have at least 6 pseudobulbs.

Let the cuttings dry and sprinkle with charcoal. Root the plants for the first time in sphagnum, and then transplant them into a substrate for orchids.
