Dill bed on the windowsill

dill in a pot on the windowsill Not only owners of summer cottages with greenhouses, but also residents of high-rise buildings can have fragrant greens all year round, because it is not very difficult to grow dill in an apartment on a windowsill. Each house has indoor flowers, which means there is an extra pot and a little substrate. And garden land can easily be collected on a flower bed at the entrance. It remains only to purchase seeds, and you can start gardening work.

What varieties of dill can be grown on a windowsill?

If it is important to get greens quickly, you can choose early maturing varieties of dill. However, it is better to plant several species, including varieties with medium and late ripening, focusing on their taste characteristics. So, juicy, lush and fragrant bushes grow from varieties such as:

  • Grenadier (early);
  • Richelieu (medium);
  • Kibray (late).

It is better not to use southern varieties of dill, which are planted in the open field, in room conditions. Despite their good taste, they are more demanding to care for.

How to prepare the soil and choose a pot?

Dill is a soil-demanding crop. He loves loose nutritious soil. In the fall, you should collect garden soil and mix it with a store-bought substrate for indoor plants.

The seed pot must be selected depending on the planned number of plantings, but the container must be deep enough.

Small bowls from violets are not very suitable for this purpose; it is better to take flowerpots for geraniums.

Seed preparation

Dill seeds contain a lot of essential oils, for this reason, they germinate for a long time. To accelerate germination, the seeds must be soaked for 20 hours in warm water. Some gardeners advise keeping the seeds in water for 2 days, changing the water every 6 hours.

Sowing dill in a pot

Put a drainage layer on the bottom of the flowerpot and cover with soil mixture. There is no need to compact, the soil must remain loose. Now you can start sowing:

  1. Moisten the earth with a spray gun.
  2. Using a stick or pencil, make small grooves no more than 1 cm deep.
  3. Moisten again, now only the grooves.
  4. Put seeds in them, you can have a little with a margin. If you are lucky and everyone will ascend, you can always thin out.
  5. Cover the grooves with dry soil from the edges of the grooves. This prevents a crust from forming on the surface.
  6. Cover the flowerpot with a plastic bag and put in a warm, dark place for 7 days.

When shoots appear, remove the package and rearrange the pot on the windowsill. In winter, it is necessary to provide the seedlings with good lighting. To do this, put the pot under a lamp (daylight), since dill is very light-loving. The lamp should be placed 50 cm above the crop.

If the pot with the plant is on the windowsill, it is quite enough to turn on the lamp only in the morning, for 4 hours. But if a fragrant bed is contained in the back of the room, you will have to light it up for 15 hours.
