Growing gin tomatoes in the open field and in the greenhouse
High yields, mid-ripening and abundant fruiting are the distinctive features of the Dutch variety of Gina tomatoes. It is these characteristics that encourage many farmers to cultivate Gin tomatoes on their land plots. Like other vegetable crops, this tomato variety has some planting details that must be considered in order to get a good harvest.

Other unique characteristics of Gin tomatoes include:
- the possibility of growing by seedling and seed methods;
- high resistance to fusarium and verticilliosis;
- unprecedented yield - 10 kg / m²;
- resistance to cracking.
The mass of the first fruits is often about 250-350 g. The average weight of specimens varies from 150 to 210 g.
The fruits are quite dense and fleshy, so they are great for transportation and canning. Despite their rounded shape, tomatoes are slightly flattened and resemble an ellipse. Their surface is smooth with slight ribbing in the tail area. The pulp is very aromatic and tasty. Since there is practically no core, the variety is used in salads and for making tomato paste. The shade of the fruit is often deep red.
The Gina TST hybrid, adapted for breeding in all territories of the Russian Federation, is smaller (up to 200 g) and has a red-orange color. Productivity - 6 kg / m².
Growing gin tomatoes for seedlings
Sowing seeds is carried out in a closed ground 50-60 days before transplanting to a land plot. Farmers are advised to plan the procedure for March or the first decade of April. The container is filled with fertile soil. The earth is lightly tamped with the palm. Planting material is sown on the surface, and covered with soil from above, or peatwhich also serves as an excellent mulch. The thickness of such a covering substrate should not exceed 1 cm. The planting must be watered with warm water and placed under the film. Send the container to a well-lit room with a temperature regime within 25-27˚С.
As soon as the shoots appear, follow the simple procedures for growing tomatoes Gina TST (hybrid) and the main variety:
- the first 5-7 days maintain the temperature in the region of 15-16˚С;
- on day 8, these indicators are reduced to 20-22 20С;
- diving is carried out when 2-3 true leaves appear.
In open ground or protected soil, seedlings are transferred to 60-65 days after sowing. By this time, the seedlings have formed up to 6-7 true leaves. Some specimens throw out flower brushes. On the land plot, seedlings are placed taking into account agrotechnical recommendations: 3-4 plants per square meter or at a distance of 40-50 cm from each other.
Producers usually indicate July-August as the main time for harvesting. However, in different climatic conditions, this indicator can change. Fruiting is observed from May to September.
Planting Gin's tomatoes outdoors
According to the instructions, sowing seeds in a seedless way is carried out at the end of April or in May. This method of growing Gina tomatoes is practiced only in the southern regions. Choose a well-lit / heated area from the windless side of the site. In this case, the soil in the garden must be drained. In wetlands, the vegetable crop is sick and stops developing.
In the northern regions, Gin's tomatoes are sown in mid or late May. The fruits begin to ripen towards the end of September.
The planting event begins with soaking the seeds (30 minutes) in a disinfecting solution prepared using potassium permanganate. In addition, seed germination is carried out using special growth stimulants. To protect the vegetable plant from many diseases, a sufficient amount of wood ash, as well as potassium-phosphate compounds, are introduced into the soil.
Seeds are planted according to this principle.:
- form grooves at a distance of 50-60 cm;
- sprinkle with ash;
- watered abundantly;
- 3-4 seeds are sown in small holes with a step of 25 cm (depth up to 2 cm);
- fall asleep with soil substrate;
- water the planting again with a watering can so as not to wash the seeds out of the soil;
- covered with a film or special agrofiber, which allows air and moisture to pass through.
Growing tomatoes is not carried out in an area where nightshade crops used to grow, especially potatoes, peppers or eggplants.
When the first shoots appear, the shelter is removed. Thinning of seedlings is planned after the formation of 1-2 true leaves. Only strong and good specimens are left. As the crop grows and develops, the soil is loosened, removing weeds. As soon as the top layer of the earth dries up, the seedlings are watered again. During flowering, "water treatment" is planned no more than 2 times a week, provided there is no precipitation. When the temperature rises to 28 ° C, irrigation is organized every day. One bush of a vegetable plant consumes up to 0.5-1 liters of water. However, it is necessary to take into account the characteristics of the soil.
To attract pollinating insects to planting, joint cultivation of tomatoes with coriander is allowed, basil and mustard.
Additional instructions for the farmer
Breeders have developed a unique variety that does not need to be shaped and tied. Its shoots are strong enough, and also not tall, therefore they can withstand the load of massive fruits. However, picking ripe tomatoes is always done on time to avoid crop depletion. In addition, under the heavy weight of large tomatoes, the bush leans towards the ground. Thus, excessive dampness forms near the root collar. If the climate is too humid or the amount of precipitation is high, this can lead to the appearance of a favorable environment for the development of dangerous diseases. Therefore, it is better to lift the bushes, tie them up. It is worth noting that Gin's tomatoes perfectly perceive fertilizing with complex fertilizers.
Such compositions are used for:
- acceleration of seed germination;
- maintaining immunity;
- improving the formation of ovaries.
Solanaceous crops are most often fertilized with organic fertilizers. Additionally, they use drugs of such a plan: Emerald, Gumatom-universal, as well as Ideal.
Nutrient complex preparations are applied both under the root and by the foliar method. Activities are usually scheduled for the morning or evening hours. After the formation of ovaries, spraying is not recommended. The feeding is carried out in the following sequence:
- 14 days after planting seedlings;
- after 10 days;
- then after 2 weeks;
- on the 20th day after the last treatment.
When growing Gin's tomatoes in a greenhouse, it is imperative to control soil moisture. Also, the greenhouse is regularly ventilated for good air circulation. As a result, the seedlings remain healthy and complete. This approach to business will be the key to a plentiful and timely harvest.
