How to grow a rose from a bouquet?

rose stalk How often it happens that for some kind of celebration we are given a beautiful bouquet of roses, and we admire the beauty of the incomparable flowers a little, and ruthlessly throw them into the trash. But from the stems it is quite possible to grow a beautiful bush of the variety you like in your summer cottage or personal plot.

For rooting, it is better to choose varieties of flowers acclimatized with us. Some roses (for example, Dutch ones), grown in greenhouse conditions in other countries, take root much worse. It often happens that the grown hybrid plant is somewhat different in color from the "mother" one.

- the process is lengthy, but interesting. It takes 2-3 years to cultivate full-fledged bushes. In order to get a viable planting material, it is not at all necessary to root cuttings immediately after receiving a bouquet. It is necessary to wait a little until the buds fade slightly.

The growing process consists of several stages:

  1. At the stem of the rose with a sharp knife, cut off the flower, the buds (if any) and leaves (the lower ones are completely, the upper ones are half). We cut it into cuttings, each of which should be 15-20 cm long. They should have 3-4 intact buds (2 internodes).
  2. We make an oblique cut under the lowest kidney, make the upper cut 1 cm above the kidney. Wet the sections with water, and then process them with dry potassium permanganate.
  3. We prepare a bright raspberry solution of potassium permanganate, in which we soak the prepared cuttings for a day.
  4. We deepen the disinfected planting material into the nutritious woody-humus substrate deeper and with a slight slope, leaving 2-3 buds above its surface. The root system of a new plant is most often formed on the lower cut of the cuttings.

How to plant a rose from a bouquet correctly?

To ensure good water and air permeability of the substrate, we pour a mixture of river sand and peat on its surface. To speed up the process of root formation, you can use such special preparations as "Heteroauxin" or "Kornevin" available in any flower shop. We breed a root growth stimulator in accordance with the instructions attached to it.

Creating a greenhouse effect

To this end, we cover each stalk with a cut plastic bottle or glass jar, burying it a little into the ground. The soil in the pot must be constantly moist. When leaves appear on cuttings, they can be periodically sprayed with soft water. The optimum temperature for rooting roses is 25 ° C.

How fast?

The plant obtained from the cuttings will eventually sprig and the first buds can develop on it. To accelerate the development of the root system, carefully remove the buds. When the first roots appear, spraying is no longer performed, and the plants are often ventilated. Typically, roses will take about 1 month to take root.

A couple of months after the rooting of the cuttings, we proceed to transplant the roses into plastic or ceramic pots.

For them, we prepare a nutritious substrate consisting of a mixture of humus, river sand and sod land in a ratio of 1: 1: 3.

cuttings in potsUntil autumn, such plants can be outdoors. Before the onset of frost, we bring them into a cool room for wintering. The air temperature in it should be about 5 ° C.

In the spring, overwintered cuttings are planted in a permanent place in open ground. To prepare holes for planting, we dig the soil onto the bayonet of a shovel. Before planting, we apply organic fertilizers to them, which accelerate the further growth of young roses. When the first flowers appear, remove them as they drain the plant.

Using the above method of rooting cuttings, you can get young rose bushes in 70-75% of cases.

The article made me think and admit my mistakes during the trial to grow a rose bush from a presented bouquet. Firstly, when you receive a bouquet or even one flower, you don’t know whether it is Dutch or grown in a city greenhouse. Secondly, the thought of planting arises only when we see the rudiments of young leaves on the stem. It is then that the thought that we are successful flower growers comes. After the flower finally withers, we cut off all unnecessary and plant the stem in the ground. Remember to cover with the jar. In my life, I have achieved that a couple of stems took root, released a couple of three leaves and wither. Maybe I still had a Dutch variety? Or am I not that successful florist? 🙂
