Campsis from cuttings: two ways of successful rooting

campsis from cuttings A fast-growing liana will decorate any corner with gorgeous flowering, so the question of how to propagate it is of interest to many gardeners. Growing Kampsis from cuttings is one of the easiest and fastest ways to get a new plant. When and how should this be done to breed a vine? There are two ways to graft a Kampsis. They differ in the "age" of the cuttings and the timing of the procedure. For rooting, either young twigs or fragments of lignified shoots are used. Let's consider each breeding option in more detail.

When to cut young shoots

They start harvesting and rooting cuttings in the summer, when the bush grows young branches. The strongest and healthiest ones are chosen from them and cut out. Then the top and bottom of the stem are cut to leave the central part with several leaves. The lower leaves on it are shortened. The top cut can be straight and the bottom cut at an angle.

To make the cuttings root faster, they are treated with a growth stimulator before planting.

Prepared shafts are planted in a cozy place in the garden, set at an angle, and must be mulched. So you don't have to water them daily, and the moisture will last longer. In autumn, the rooted cuttings are covered, otherwise they will not survive the winter.

For a successful wintering, cuttings can be planted not in open ground, but first in pots. Then they can be brought into the basement for the winter.

Campsis from last year's cuttings: how to choose and root planting material?

Propagation of Kampsis by lignified cuttings gives a higher survival rate. The branches are already strong, they do not react so sharply to cutting and grow roots faster. There is one more plus: you can start grafting in the spring, because last year's whips act as planting material. And the procedure itself is often combined with spring pruning. vines... So you can get cuttings without once again injuring the bush.

Campsis from last year's cuttings is grown in this way:

  1. They choose healthy lashes, in the sense that they are not sick, elastic and without traces of damage.
  2. Small shafts with a maximum length of 30 cm are cut from them. In addition, each segment should have a pair of live buds.
  3. The cuttings are rooted in a container with nutrient soil. While it is still cold outside, you can put it indoors. With the onset of heat, the pots are taken out into the garden.
  4. When the soil warms up well and the threat of recurrent frosts disappears, the cuttings are planted in a permanent place.

When planting young Kampsis seedlings directly into the garden, they need careful shelter for the winter. Some gardeners prefer to grow liana in pots for the first year, taking it indoors for the winter. In this case, planting in open ground is carried out next spring, in the month of May.
