Coreopsis Sunbarst - An unpretentious blooming perennial in your garden

Please tell us about the coreopsis Sunbarst flower. When buying seeds, I came across a bag with large yellow flowers that looked like either chamomile or marigolds. I love everything bright, so I decided to try to grow it. It's a pity, there was practically no information on the package. The only thing I understood is that the seeds can be sown directly into the ground. But every year or is it a perennial?

coreopsis sunbarst Perhaps the most common plants that can be seen in flower beds are representatives of the Aster family. One of these crops, happily grown by gardeners, is Coreopsis Sunbarst. The refined simplicity of large bright yellow flowers, combined with the unpretentiousness of the plant, make it a welcome guest in the garden.

Description of the plant

There are more than 100 types of coreopsis, among which there are both annual varieties and perennials. The latter include Sunbarst - a rather large herbaceous shrub up to 80 cm high with a developed branched rhizome. The lower part of the bush is a lush rosette of elongated whole leaves. The upper leaves are pinnate, but the peduncle itself is naked. Strong enough, it rises above the bush, and single flowers bloom at the top in early summer. They are terry, with bright yellow petals and a darker core. The edges of the petals are uneven, serrated, which adds decorative effect.

Sunburst is a large-flowered perennial coreopsis species.

Coreopsis Sunbarst: How to Grow

coreopsis seeds

A plant is grown from seeds that can be sown in two ways:

  1. In late April - early May - directly into open ground.
  2. For seedlings in March. Transplanting bushes to a flower bed - at the beginning of summer.

When sowing seeds directly into the garden, coreopsis will bloom only in the next season. If you first grow seedlings, flowering can be seen this summer.

One of the advantages of the plant is the lack of special requirements for the soil. Coreopsis grows even better if the soil is not too fertile, but at the same time loose. In nutrient-rich soil, the bushes grow more lush deciduous head, but bloom worse.

To maintain the abundance of flowering and the large size of the inflorescences, coreopsis should be planted in well-lit areas. It is desirable that they be protected from the wind, which can "break up" the bush and break the flower stalks.

When planting in rows between the bushes, you need to leave at least 30 cm, otherwise they will be cramped.

How to care for coreopsis in the garden

coreopsis bushFlowering perennial unpretentious, and caring for it consists of procedures that are quite usual for gardeners:

  1. Weed weeding.
  2. Regular watering of young bush. Adult plants tolerate short-term drought well. But if the summer is not rainy, sometimes you will need to water them too.
  3. Top dressing depends on the soil in which the flower grows. If it is fertile, then the first season plants can survive without additional fertilization. In subsequent years, it will be enough to feed coreopsis with the mineral complex twice: during the flowering period and in the fall, after pruning. Coreopsis growing on poor soil should be “fed” in the first year.
  4. Removal of faded peduncles.

In a windy area, it is advisable to install supports near the bushes.

Coreopsis hibernates well even without shelter, but its aerial part dies off.In the fall, you need to completely cut it off.
