Fern polypodium - a luxury option for the home

fern polypodium The evergreen polypodium fern is an epiphytic plant, so it feels great without land. Able to cling to tree trunks and branches. In indoor conditions, only two species are bred. One of them is golden. Its carved foliage has a bluish tint. Young shoots are presented in the form of single deciduous plates. As they get older, they divide into three blades. In adulthood, fronds resemble the branches of a palm tree.

The fluffy crown of a herbaceous plant in wide pots looks original. The root system of the culture is so creeping that it grows at lightning speed over large open spaces.

Fern polydium and its planting

The purchased seedling is left in this state for a couple of weeks. After a while, it is carefully pulled out of the container. The store substrate is conscientiously shaken off, but so as not to injure the rhizome. The soil is prepared for him with the following characteristics:

  • nutritious;
  • slightly acidic;
  • loose.

Peat added only if necessary, since it is found in many substrates. Sand is also mandatory. A layer of expanded clay is covered at the bottom, especially if the capacity is too high. For the polypodium fern, woody remains will also be useful.

Shaggy rhizomes should not be buried too deep. The earth is covered only on the sides. Press with a light movement of the hand, without pressing hard. Now the seedling is watered abundantly. Use soft water for this.

During the winter transplant, it is not necessary for the liquid to get onto the root system. Otherwise, plaque forms on the scales.

Care alphabet

The culture does not like both stagnant water and dryness. For this reason, drainage is used in the form of expanded clay or a hole in the bottom of the tank. However, this species is not the most picky about care. Water the pot only after the topsoil is dry. Practice shows that summer irrigation is carried out once a week, and winter - once every ten days. Due to a lack of moisture, the tips of the leaves can dry out. The required air humidity is 50-60%.

Leaves should not be touched with hands. After all, then the silvery bloom is erased and the bush loses its presentability.

Regarding lighting, it is worth knowing that it needs a bright light, but only a diffused type - without the sun's rays. Otherwise, the foliage will turn yellow and growth will stop. In the summer season, the plant is comfortable on the east or west side, in the winter - on the south. At the same time, a suitable temperature regime is observed - within 20-28 ° C. But at below + 12 ° C, the rhizome begins to rot, and the culture dies.

Among other things, the polypodium fern does not tolerate spraying. However, sometimes she likes to take a shower. During the procedure, the ground is protected from moisture. With age, the first leaves begin to dry and then fall off.
