The largest-fruited walnut varieties - choosing giants for super-harvest
When buying walnut seedlings, owners of small plots prefer low-growing species. But if the size of your plot allows, without a doubt, make your choice in favor of yield by purchasing large-fruited varieties of nuts. There are also quite compact plants among them, but the main advantage of such species is their size. Their fruits are several times larger, moreover, for the most part they have a thin shell and a large kernel. And this means that the yield of such crops will be at a high level.
To appreciate the benefits of each variety, keep in mind that the average weight of a regular walnut is about 10 g.
Large-fruited walnut varieties
Among the varieties that give a good harvest of very large fruits, it is worth noting the following nuts:
- Giant;
- Bukovina bomb;
- Kalarashsky;
- Astakhovsky;
- Memory of Minov.
Most of them are quite vigorous trees and take up a lot of space in the garden. But some are quite suitable for growing in private plots.
Nut Giant
Medium-sized late variety, not exceeding 9 m in height. The crown is wide and dense. It blooms late, in the second decade of May, so there is no threat of freezing. Fruiting for 6 years in September-October at the tops of twigs, tying 2-3 nuts. The variety is frost-resistant.
From an adult tree over 15 years old, you can collect up to 40 kg of nuts, with a net weight, without shells. The fruits are very large, on average about 6 cm long and weighing up to 40 g. The kernel is located freely inside the shell and has thin partitions, making it easy to get it whole. It is milky white with brown tips, sweet. The shell itself is rather loose, easily broken. Nuts keep well until spring without losing their sweet taste.
The variety is picky about moisture. If the tree is not watered, the back of the kernel dries out.
Walnut Bukovina bomb
Mid-season, vigorous species with good productivity and winter hardiness. A mature tree with a spherical crown yields over 35 kg of nuts. Fruits weighing up to 20 g with a light kernel, which can be easily removed as a whole. The shell is quite thick but breaks easily. Harvesting - from the second half of September.
With seed propagation, varietal characteristics are preserved.
Kalarashsky walnut
Mid-season variety, tall tree, with a dense rounded crown. Flowering occurs in the second half of May. Average winter hardiness. Fruits are round in shape, with slightly pronounced ribbing. The shell is hard, but cracks well. The weight of one nut is from 15 to 19 g, the kernel is oily, tasty, completely separated.
The variety is susceptible to brown spot disease in high humidity conditions.
Astakhovsky nut
An early variety resistant to diseases and pests. Winter hardiness is good, if it freezes, it quickly recovers. The height of the tree reaches 10 m, the crown is round. Oblong nuts ripen in mid-September, weight is 23 g. The shell is thin, the kernel is white, juicy, sweet.
It is better to plant a nut at the edge of the plot, as it grows quickly.
Walnut Memory of Minov
Mid-season variety, powerful tree, with a pitch-shaped crown of medium thickening. Bears fruit for 5 years after planting the seedling. Nuts are slightly flattened, with a blunt top. The average weight is about 15 g. The shell is thin, the kernel is yellow. Ripen at the end of September.
