We plant allium in autumn: when, where and how

A neighbor shared with me allium bulbs and said that they can be planted now, without waiting for spring. Tell me when is it better to plant allium in the fall and how does the plant relate to partial shade? I heard that he needs the sun, and my only free area is slightly shaded.

planting allium Large balls or small neat balls of blue, pink or yellow can often be found in flower beds. This allium is one of the most unpretentious plants from the onion family. Its simple but graceful beauty fully reflects the nature of the flower, because its cultivation does not require much effort at all. If you initially plant the allium on time and choose the right place for it, in the future it will delight with its inflorescences-balls every year.

When to plant?

Most often to planting allium start in the fall, because at this time roots can already form on the bulbs and by the onset of a stable low temperature, the plant has time to take root and get stronger, which ensures it a successful wintering in the open field. The exact time when you can plant allium in the fall depends on the growing region and ranges from the second half of September to October.

Leaves on trees can serve as a guideline: as soon as they begin to fall off, you can start planting.

Experienced flower growers recommend planting early and medium-flowering varieties of allium before winter, but types of bulbous culture with late flowering periods take root quite well in spring and manage to bloom in the year of planting.

The optimum air temperature for the autumn planting of allium is at least 10 degrees Celsius.

Where to plant?allium

Allium, like most flowering crops, needs good lighting, so it is important to assign it an area that is exposed to the sun for at least 6 hours. However, it is quite possible to grow this flower even in light partial shade, but in this case it is better to plant there compact, low allium varieties, because in insufficient light, the stems of the plant stretch and weaken. Tall, large-flowering species can break under the weight of the inflorescence.

As for the soil, alliums can grow in almost any soil, but they absolutely cannot tolerate heavy and dense soil - in it the bulbs begin to rot.
