Among garden crops, cucumbers stand out for their rapid growth and intense fruiting. Knowing how to tie up cucumbers in the open field, a summer resident can significantly extend the life of a plant and greatly increase its yield.
To provide the gardener with a harvest of juicy crispy greens, cucumbers of modern varieties form powerful whips, strewn with male and female flowers. Their number can be in the tens and hundreds.
But how many ovaries are formed depends on the growing conditions:
- lighting and airing the beds;
- moisture entering the plants;
- sufficient food;
- the presence of insects, if bee-pollinated varieties are planted in the country.

Timing and methods of garter cucumbers in the open field
Novice gardeners often believe that they will always have time to choose a suitable garter method. There is still time before the flowering of cucumbers, the lashes are just beginning to grow, and it will not be difficult to raise them. This opinion is a serious mistake!
An experienced summer resident is engaged in the formation of a bush throughout the life of a plant, and it should be dulled to their garter when they grow 30–40 cm, that is, at the stage of 4–5 true leaves. If you delay, the rapidly growing stems can easily break off and lose crops.
How to tie up cucumbers in the open field, what methods are there? In the open field for ordering cucumber stalks are traditionally used:
- a horizontal garter, when transverse ropes or wire are pulled between two or more vertical supports;
- a vertical garter on trellises installed above each row of plants planted in the ground;
- a garter on a grid, which simplifies the procedure for forming bushes and allows you to combine the advantages of the first two methods.
Among summer residents there are many adherents of planting cucumbers along the fence. In this case, the fence itself serves as an improvised trellis for cucumbers in the open ground, to which the plants cling to their whiskers and gradually entwine all the available space.
Garter cucumbers on a trellis in the open field
Trellises installed above the beds allow you to quickly and reliably fasten the whips and allow them to grow freely upward. Before tying cucumbers in the open field, you need to take care of making a U-shaped trellis. To do this, take metal or wooden supports, which are installed at both ends of the row.
If a horizontal garter is to be made, a rigid cross-piece is not made, but at a distance of 20-30 cm from the ground and to the very top, the wire or strong ropes are tightly pulled in rows. When the whips reach the height of the first row, the whiskers will grab the rope and anchor the plant. As they grow, the stems themselves rise higher and higher, and there is a place for each shoot.
The only weak side of horizontal tying is the inability to make such a trellis for cucumbers in the open field too high. The moment is inevitable when the tops of the whips begin to hang from the upper rope tier.
Cucumbers on a trellis in the open field are also tied up vertically. For this, a rigid U-shaped structure is built, to which ropes or strips of dense fabric are sequentially tied along the top and lowered down. The lower end of a free loop that does not injure the shoot is attached under the first real cucumber leaf, and the stem is directed upward.
At least one rope should stretch to each cucumber plant on a trellis in the open field. If the bush is strong and has formed several shoots with ovaries, several directing vertical twines are tied to it at once.
How to tie up cucumbers in the open field on a net
Today, for plants such as cucumbers, melons, loofah, butternut squash, an elastic plastic mesh with a mesh of different sizes is produced. Using such an improvement in the country, you can save time and provide cucumbers with very high-quality support, combining all the positive aspects of a vertical and horizontal garter. At the same time, the mesh without difficulty and damage to the lashes can withstand not only them, but also the weight of the growing greens.
Before tying up the cucumbers in the open field on a grid, strong supports are installed on both sides of the garden. For long ridges, additional posts are provided to prevent sagging and falling plants along with a trellis.
Rigid wire or wood grates can be used instead of plastic or rope mesh. When choosing such a material, it is better to give preference to nets with a large mesh, which will not interfere with the growth of leaves and ovaries.
