Bright, delicate, charming and gorgeous roses cannot leave any gardener indifferent. But having set out to settle this natural miracle on their site, many are faced with the problem of how to organize the rose garden so that it turns out to be both spectacular, and fit into the general style of the garden, and not too demanding to care for.

It is not easy to cope with the task also because the world of roses is so wide that you can get lost in the names of species alone: ​​standard and polyanthus, miniature and climbing, grandiflora and floribunda ... and there are also varieties and dozens of shades and shapes. And all this should be taken into account when thinking about the design of a flower bed of roses.

The location of the flower bed with roses

But you still need to start by choosing a place for the future flower garden. Roses prefer sunny areas protected from the wind, where in the morning and the hottest, noon hours, flowers can hide in partial shade, but in the late afternoon nothing blocks the flowers from the sun.

Roses also have their own requirements for soil:

• Groundwater should not be closer than two meters from the surface;
• Good drainage and adequate nutrition are important;
• And if the soils are dense and heavy, then it is better to add a sandy or peat mixture in advance.

The easiest way to arrange a flower bed with roses is not in the center of the site, but near buildings or fences, near trees or along paths. This will protect the plants from the wind, shelter them for the winter and keep the decorative plantings for a long time.

Regular rose garden

Such plantings in the style of palace parks, although undoubtedly magnificent, are more often justified in the southern regions, where roses may not be afraid of frost. The classic parterre version of the rose garden can be organized as follows: In the center of a geometrically correct composition, located between two park paths, bush roses are placed, hybrid tea is planted closer to the edge, and polyanthus become a living border.

For a flower bed of roses, the design of which is sustained in the style of a regular garden, the static center of the composition is also characteristic, replacing spray roses - this can be, for example, a statue, a tall flowerpot or even a fountain.

However, when arranging a hedge of roses, it is important to remember that in addition to the mass of advantages, it also has disadvantages:

• Roses require a sunny, wind-protected place;
• In the fall months, after the leaves are shed by roses, such a hedge can look bare and unattractive. Solving the problem in the selection of varieties that bloom until late autumn, do not shed foliage or have bright decorative fruits;
• Even with painstaking pruning, it is not always possible to achieve a neat hedge.

For a hedge, it is better to take seedlings of two or three years of age, planted in a trench up to 60 cm deep. Deciduous roses of summer flowering are planted in the first half of autumn, and evergreen varieties in spring.

DIY mixed flower bed with roses

When creating a mixborder with roses, it is extremely important to take into account the grouping of plants, and not only roses, but all other species, in height and, undoubtedly, in terms of flowering time.

Ideally, if the end of flowering of one of the varieties coincides with the beginning of flowering of the other. As for lawns, for mixborders you do not need to take rapidly growing roses, which will unwittingly displace other plants and can, thus, over time, significantly reduce the decorativeness of a flower bed with roses.

In one-sided mixborders, planting of tall bushes is organized away from the viewer, the most spectacular medium-sized varieties are planted in the center, and miniature or even ground cover varieties of roses are brought to the fore.

In mixed flower beds viewed from all sides, tall plants are planted along a line of symmetry or in the center.
Depending on the variety and size, it is important to plant rose bushes at a distance from each other and other plants, and the row closest to the path is organized at least half a meter from the curb.

Garden border

The same principle applies when planting narrow decorative borders with roses.

Low-growing roses perfectly accentuate the bends of paths or emphasize the transition from horizontal to vertical landscaping.

• Roses do not like loneliness too much, so the variety should be represented by three or five bushes.

• In the center of a large flower bed with roses, a bright tall bush or a single standard rose is placed.

The main advantage of a mixborder with roses is the duration and change of flowering of plants: while the roses are not blooming, other early-flowering plants, for example, bulbous plants, give a decorative look to the flowerbed; then roses come into effect, and after they fall, autumn flowers, cereals or dried flowers will appear.

Companion plants for roses:

• Conifers of various kinds and sizes;
• Barberries, silvery types of wormwood, elk and vesicle;
• Seasonal bulbous plants;
• Clematis;
• Unpretentious decorative perennials that serve as a background for rose bushes;
• Planted annual flowering plants that fill the voids in the planting.

Around a flower bed of roses, you can make a border of gravel, tiles or stone; natural mulch from bark or gravel chips looks good. It is important to leave at least 50 cm from the edge of the path to the first row of roses.

DIY rose flower bed

First, the boundaries of the flower bed are determined, then the soil is removed by 10-15 cm, the bottom is compacted and the fence of the future flower garden is organized to outline its clear boundaries.
