Raspberry Polka - variety description, photo
Young growth yields a harvest in the second half of July and bears fruit until October. Moreover, the last berries ripen after a slight frost, which is not found in any variety. And if you do not completely cut out the raspberry tree in the fall, but only shorten the stems, then the first berries on these branches will ripen in June.
The variety is resistant to gray rot and damage spider mite... But its root system has low immunity. Polka also suffers from heat and drought and has an average frost resistance. However, the latter fact is not important if shrubs are cut on a stump in the fall.
Plant characteristic
Raspberry bushes are compact in size. Their average height is about 1.5 m, which is very convenient in terms of care and harvesting. The shoots themselves are strong and stable, do not bend under the weight of the berries, therefore they do not need support. They have medium shoots and do not grow much.
Polka begins fruiting in the year of planting.
Productivity and taste
Berries are collected in clusters up to 10 pieces each. They are slightly elongated, not giants, but rather large - 3 cm long and 15 g in weight. The pulp is dense, juicy, with a characteristic bright aroma and sweet taste. The sour note is weak. Raspberries keep their shape well, which allows the berries to endure long transportation.
Advantages and disadvantages
The variety will earn its fame thanks to the following advantages:
- fast and very long fruiting;
- excellent sweet taste of berries;
- transportability;
- compact size of the bush;
- lack of numerous growths;
- the possibility of growing both in the open field and in the greenhouse;
- resistance to the main disease of raspberries.
True, it was not without the shortcomings that each variety has. In Polka, this is the vulnerability of roots to diseases and low drought resistance.But regular watering and preventive treatments of the raspberry tree will help correct these disadvantages.
