All gardeners know the golden rule of a good harvest - crop rotation. Without it, a good-quality vegetable garden in a couple of three will no longer be able to provide crops with everything necessary. In addition, some plants are completely unable to coexist with each other.
Cucumbers are no exception to the rule. It is advisable to change their planting site annually so that the land is restored and pathogenic bacteria do not accumulate. But a vegetable garden is not a field, its area is limited, and even one owner can hardly afford to keep cucumber beds “under steam”, because crispy vegetables will also take someone else's place. What can you plant after cucumbers next year?
Garden plants to replace cucumbers
When choosing crops, you can focus on the root system. In cucumbers, it is rather superficial and deepens into the soil by a maximum of 25 cm.
This means that nutrients remain in deeper layers and plants whose roots go deeper into the ground (for example, root crops) are quite suitable for replacement.
In the beds after cucumbers, you can grow:
- beets;
- carrots;
- turnips and radishes;
- parsley and celery root.
The following crops also grow well on former cucumber beds:
- potatoes;
- bow;
- garlic;
- tomatoes.
It is good to grow beans or peas to rebalance the nutrient balance in the cucumber in the next season.
What if there is no opportunity to change cultures?
It also happens that the area allotted for planting is too small, and there is simply nowhere to apply the rules of crop rotation on it. In this case, you should try to restore the composition of the soil as much as possible. They can help in this matter green manure plants... After cucumbers, they restore the soil well:
