Gardeners tell you how to sow lavender seeds before winter

sowing lavender seeds before winter In mid-October / November, when the temperature is between 10-15 ° C, it is just time to take care of your flower bed. Sowing lavender seeds before winter is carried out in dry weather, after the rainy season. The soil is fertilized with organic matter, compacted a little, and then sprinkled with sand. The layer is made thin, like a veil.

Florists recommend planning the beds in advance so that you can then observe the seedlings. The width of each planting site varies from 30 to 40 cm.

Sowing lavender seeds before winter in open ground

English and French varieties of flower culture are matched the most suitable for planting in the middle lane. They are hardy and able to quickly adapt to changing circumstances. However, the purpose of the first variety is exclusively medicinal, and the second is decorative. The latter is planted on terraces, balconies, and the house is also decorated with flowerpots.

It should be borne in mind that English lavender seeds are very small. Therefore, for a comfortable fit, they are mixed with sand. Then they will not reach for their hands. Thanks to this method, the seedlings will not be too thick. It is not necessary to stratify the seeds, because when sowing lavender seeds in the ground before winter, they are there:

  • winter successfully;
  • will be under wet snow;
  • be exposed to subzero temperatures.

Planting material is sown in zigzag movements, evenly distributing it over the bed. Then sand is sifted through a sieve, thereby covering the sown grains. By tradition, the first shoots appear in May or early June. The timing depends on the climatic conditions of the area where the sowing was carried out.

The distance between the beds is 30 cm, as is the width of the planting strip itself. Since the soil is already wet during the sowing period, the aisle is covered with a cardboard path so as not to stain your feet.

Safe shelter

Fierce frosts, rains and winds await the garden ahead. Therefore, it is recommended to cover the site with agrofibre. Buy a canvas with a thickness of 30 g / m². They fix the material with umbrellas, which are used in construction. At the first frost, a decent layer is placed on top of the shelter of:

  • spruce branches;
  • dry plants;
  • straw;
  • snow.

Yet the latter option is considered the most reliable shelter from the weather. It does not let cold masses go inside. As a result, the thermal balance between air and ground remains within normal limits. Under such a "fur coat" the grains will be comfortable. At the same time, with warming, the lower layer of snow will begin to melt, thus saturating future shoots with moisture. According to such a simple scheme, lavender seeds are sown before winter.
