Saving roses from powdery mildew
With the arrival of summer, rose growers' favorites are practically defenseless against one of the most common diseases - powdery mildew. Low night temperatures, lack of light with thickened plantings, lack or excess of certain trace elements in the soil lead to the fact that the bushes are affected by a dangerous fungus. If left to chance, disease can cause enormous damage to flower queens.
Measures to combat powdery mildew on roses depend on the stage of the disease and the area of the lesion. If the disease has just manifested itself and has captured a couple of bushes, it is more expedient to use folk methods. But with a large-scale defeat, they may not work. In this case, you will need more serious means, popularly called "chemistry".
Folk recipes against powdery mildew
At the initial stage of the appearance of white bloom on roses, the bushes can be sprayed with one of the solutions of your choice:
- soda and soap solution (50 g of soda and the same amount of soap per bucket of water);
- garlic infusion (boil 80 g of chopped cloves in 10 liters of water);
- mustard infusion (2-3 tablespoons of powder per 10 liters of warm water);
- solution based on serum and iodine (1 liter and 10 drops, respectively, in a bucket of water).
It is necessary to spray roses with a fresh solution at least twice in the evening. Cut and burn infected leaves and flowers.
Chemical control measures
If the start time diseases many bushes are missed or sick, it is better to take special preparations. Such fungicides cope well with powdery mildew, such as:
- Topaz.
- Speed
- Fundazol.
- Previkur.
- Fitosporin -M.
When treating roses with fungicides, you should maintain an interval of 2 weeks and alternate the means so as not to become addictive.
Disease prevention
To prevent the occurrence and development of a dangerous fungus, it is necessary to regularly carry out preventive measures:
- weed the flowerbed, avoiding the multiplication of weeds;
- when applying fertilizers, give preference to organic matter and potassium-phosphorus preparations, avoiding an excess of nitrogen;
- in spring and autumn, treat roses with copper sulfate with the addition of soap;
- in the fall, remove all dry foliage under the bush and dig up the soil.
In addition, it is important even at the stage of planting seedlings to choose a well-lit and wind-free place for them, and when breaking down rosary leave sufficient distance between the bushes.
