Banana peel fertilizer for tomatoes and cucumbers: how to prepare and apply?
Banana peels can be used to fertilization of cucumbers and tomatoes in one of the following ways:
- apply fresh when planting plants;
- use as mulch;
- prepare an infusion for root dressings;
- to make "banana" compost from waste.
Applying banana peel when planting seedlings
Fresh banana skins are recommended to be added to the bottom of the pots when picking tomato seedlings. They must first be cut. For adult tomato seedlings planted in the beds, as well as for cucumbers, it will be useful to carefully dig in the skin near the root system of the plants.
Within 2 weeks, banana waste in the soil will decompose, and the products of their decay will replenish the soil with nutrients and improve its water and air permeability.
It is recommended to sprinkle the banana peel with a layer of soil so that it does not grow moldy on contact with air.
Mulching plantings
Dried chopped skins of exotic fruit are an excellent mulching agent. Of course, with the massive garden cultivation of tomatoes and cucumbers, this is almost impossible to do, but it is quite possible to collect material for a small greenhouse in a season.
"Banana" infusion for root dressing
The most effective is the use of banana peel infusion when growing cucumbers and tomatoes in greenhouses. But the plants in the beds in the open field will respond with gratitude to watering with a nutrient solution, especially the newly planted young seedlings.
Infusion for watering tomatoes and cucumbers can be prepared using:
- Fresh peel... Put three banana skins in a 3 liter bottle and cover with water at room temperature. Let it brew for 3 days. Dilute the infusion with water in a 1: 1 ratio and water the plants under the root.
- Dried banana skins... Put 4 peels in 1 liter of water, leave for a couple of days, dilute.
Banana peels must be washed thoroughly before use. It accumulates various chemicals that are used to process bananas during growth and after harvest to increase shelf life.
Banana peel compost
Banana skins, along with the rest of the kitchen waste, are usually used when laying the compost heap. If desired (if suddenly a large amount of such a peel has collected), you can prepare "banana" compost from them without adding other waste:
- pour ordinary soil from the garden and peel into a plastic container;
- spill the workpiece with Baikal to accelerate ripening and mix.
After 4 weeks, fertilize the mass again with the preparation and turn it well. Nutritious for next season compost he'll be ready.
