How to choose a gazebo style?

Depending on the style of landscape design and a residential building on the site, you can choose the appropriate version of the gazebo:

  1. Classic style: symmetry, proportionality, 4- or 6-sided shape, regular geometric lines. The roof is predominantly 2-, 4- or 6-pitched, covered with tiles. The domed shape looks harmonious.gazebo in classic style
  2. Oriental style: the focal point of the structure is a domed or unusual roof. The second characteristic feature is unusual ornamental compositions as decor. Interior trim must match the exterior design. Options for oriental buildings are a pagoda gazebo or a Japanese-style minimalism design.gazebo in oriental style
  3. Victorian aesthetics: The English-style gazebo combines classic and country-style features. Wood is the most popular material for Victorian construction and is commonly painted white. Victorian gazeboSemi-closed or open light structures are characteristic, the perimeter is decorated with climbing plants. Features: symmetry, regular and clear forms, lattice walls, light colors.
  4. The rustic style allows the use of rough, untreated wood - this is the very beauty and uniqueness of the gazebo. Such an unusual, "uncouth" design creates a feeling of coziness and home warmth. The shape and design completely depend on your desire.Styling like a chalet, a forester's house or a bird's nest will harmoniously look on the territory of the personal plot.rustic style of wood arbor design
  5. Country gazebos combine the features of rustic and classic. Made from wood only! It is recommended to use a carved ornament as a decoration. Design options: styling like a log house, a fabulous hut on chicken legs and others - you can fully show your creativity. The structure can be closed or open.country style gazebo
  6. The Mediterranean design of the gazebo and the pergola are almost identical concepts. Light, open pergola, entwined with exquisite plants, is typical for areas with a subtropical, Mediterranean climate. In creating a structure, wood is used in combination with stone, brick. The floors are laid with ceramic tiles or finished with solid boards.pergola made of wood

Do-it-yourself gazebos for summer cottages are represented by two of their distant relatives:

  1. Belvedere is a lightweight, open design designed for elevated installations. Provides excellent all-round visibility in scenic areas.gazebo
  2. A pergola or "canopy" is a light, open gazebo used during the warmer months. Openwork, arched constructions are used as a support for climbing plants. The most popular material for the construction of a pergola is natural wood: oak, spruce, pine.pergola

Diy gazebos: where to start?

If you have chosen a style and design option, it is worth choosing a place for the location of the structure. Depending on the size and shape of the site, the dimensions of a small architectural structure depend. Consider the purpose for which you are installing the structure:

  • feasts of a large family in summer and winter or all year round;
  • decoration of the personal plot;
  • a convenient place for tea in the summer;
  • rest in large companies on holidays or on weekends.

In the first case, it is worth choosing a secluded place, not very close to a residential building, so that non-friendly gatherings do not interfere with the rest of those who are in the house. Especially if several generations live in the house. As a decoration, the gazebo is installed so that it fits harmoniously into landscape design and emphasized its features.

large gazeboA gazebo for feasts can be made in a closed form by equipping a fireplace inside, a lighting system, installing heating devices. If you install it close to home, you can quickly carry food and dishes prepared in the kitchen.

How to make gazebo for giving or infield? It is worth paying attention to the recommendations.

Choose a place for construction according to the following criteria:

  • the site should not be flooded;
  • preferably a flat, open place;
  • you should not install a gazebo next to outbuildings and toilet.

Do-it-yourself photos and drawings of wooden arbors will help you choose the best option:drawing of a gazebo made of wood

The foundation and walls for the gazebo

gazebo made of wood in the country with their own handsDepending on the type of soil, the purpose of the construction of the building, its parameters, we choose the type of foundation: slab, columnar, tape. A massive construction needs a solid and reliable foundation.

Wall options:

  • wooden beam;
  • boards;
  • solid logs;
  • reiki.

If you are a professional, it will not be difficult to build a structure of a complex shape, round or 6-sided. We recommend that a beginner start with a simple, square or rectangular gazebo with lattice walls - it looks elegant and stylish.

Diy gazebo: drawings and dimensions

the location of the arbor made of woodConsider the features of building a small, open gazebo made of wood. Characteristics of the future design:

  • size: 3x3 meters;
  • the height of the structure to the top is 3.5 meters;
  • 4-pitched roof;
  • columnar foundation.

The initial stage for the construction of a gazebo

Site preparation for construction. It must be cleared, excess vegetation removed, and the surface leveled. The size of the plot should be one and a half meters larger on each side than the building itself.A do-it-yourself natural wood gazebo must be protected from flooding.

We buy materials for the gazebo

For a square building of 3x3 meters, you need to purchase a bar in several section options:

  • 10x10 cm: 3-meter beams in the amount of 5 pieces for the base; 4 pieces of 2.3 meters in length for supports, 5 pieces of meter in length for the construction of the entrance, 3 pieces for strengthening and stiffness of the structure, for the center of other sides of the structure.
  • 10x4 cm: for the roof - 8 pieces of 2 meters each, 7 beams of 3 meters each for strapping and railings, beams of 2 pieces each in sizes 1 and 4.3 meters (roof cross and railing).

To create a gazebo, except for a bar:

  • massive flooring: 4 cm thick, 9 sq. m;
  • lining in the amount of 20 sq. m;
  • wooden slats;
  • inch for roof lathing;
  • roof covering;
  • bricks and cement;
  • 5 kg of nails and screws;
  • special processing agents for wood (about 15-20 liters).

Installation of a columnar foundation

preparation of a place for a columnar foundationHow to build a gazebo with your own hands? It is very important to build the foundation correctly.

Optimal view foundation for a small, open building - columnar. In this case, a brick is selected for it.

What you need to install a columnar foundation:

  • an item for digging holes under the posts: a drill or an ordinary shovel;
  • level for alignment;
  • roulette;
  • material for posts;
  • cement;
  • steel reinforcement to strengthen the structure;
  • roofing material for waterproofing the bottom of a wooden gazebo.

Want to save money? If you have a used brick, you can use it for the foundation.

the base of the gazebo on a columnar foundationA drawing is presented, according to which the territory for the installation of the gazebo should be marked.drawing of the marking of the territory under the foundation for the gazebo

The points at which the foundation pillars will be installed, it is necessary to dig holes. The last row of bricks should be at ground level. Before laying the bricks, you need to create a pillow that fits to the bottom of the pit. The pillow is made of rubble or sand.

Using the hydro level, it is necessary to align the plane of the brick pillars. To ensure the rigidity of the structure, reinforcement bars must be inserted into the corner posts.

Given the size of the building, the result should be 9 columns: 4 corner, 4 intermediate between the corner, 1 central.

The supports should be located under the side walls every 2 meters. Considering that a brick was chosen as the material for the supports, the holes need to be dug with a shovel, they should have a square shape. The recommended depth is 50 cm (not less). A hand drill is used if the posts are made, for example, from metal pipes.

It is recommended to provide waterproofing and protection of the bottom of the gazebo from moisture. For this, a double layer of roofing material is used. Do-it-yourself installation of a gazebo for a summer residence is presented in the drawings and in the photo.

For the base, beams with a section of 10x10 cm in the amount of 5 pieces were purchased. The reinforcement, which remains on the surface of the posts, is placed in a hole drilled in the corner beams.

In order to connect the bars at their intersection, you can use the "half-tree" fastening technique. If everything is done according to technology, the result will be a reliable, durable design.

Installation of the floor in the gazebo

The structure can be made with or without a floor. Floor installation requires a foundation.

If there is no floor, it is required to prepare a platform for the gazebo, finished with paving slabs, cobblestones. The option without creating a special area is also allowed for summer open buildings.

Now consider the option with a foundation and floors. Installation is carried out after the foundation is fully completed and strengthened. What you need for the floor:

  • timber;
  • edged board;
  • tools: hammer, drill, level, jigsaw;
  • nails.

The easiest way to create flooring in a gazebo is square or rectangular. The first step is to install the timber around the perimeter of the base. Fastening is carried out using reinforcement that protrudes from the foundation.

wooden gazebo floor logsThe next step is to install logs every 30-40 cm.The floor should not be sloped, so a level should be used.

floor boardingAnd the last - floor sheathing with boards.

For processing wood, it is necessary to use special substances to protect against decay, the negative influence of insects.

Installing the frame

installation of the frame of a wooden arborFor the frame, logs with a length of 2.3 meters with a section of 10x10 cm are intended:

  1. The surface of the planks must be smooth and an electric plane can be used for surface treatment.
  2. It is necessary to make cuts for fastening the roof rafters. The thickness of the cut depends on the thickness of the planks.
  3. In the corners of the gazebo there are fittings that must be placed on the support pillars. To do this, a small hole must be made at the end of the post - about 1 cm in diameter.
  4. The posts must be absolutely straight upright - you need to use a level to check the position of the post.
  5. The position of the post is fixed using first rough and then finishing struts from a bar.

In addition to wood, PVC or steel pipes are used for the frame. Polymeric materials do not require special protection against decay.

Installation of a roof for a gazebo and clapboard sheathing

gazebo roof installationConstruction process:

  1. For the roof, a cross is formed from wooden beams. For connection, you can use the "half-tree" technique.
  2. At the edges of the boards, cuts are made to connect with similar cuts on the supports.
  3. It is recommended to use a special block to enhance the strength and durability of the joint.
  4. The structure is installed on supports.

After the frame is assembled, it is required to install the piping of the posts and railings.

It is planned to create a 4-pitched roof and cover it with bituminous tiles.

To create the roof, we use a 10x10 cm beam - an octagonal about 80 cm long is made from it. In the bar, he makes a cut for the first 2 planks. This is a post that will be fixed in the central part of the cross, it will provide the strength of the future roof.

2 rafters are connected in the "half-wood" way and are fixed in the grooves. We then attach the overlay to the central post a second pair of rafters. The entire structure is assembled on the ground.collecting the roof structure on the ground

When 2 pairs of rafters are fixed, we fasten 4 more planks so that their lower ends lie on a bunch of external posts.

If snowfalls with heavy snow are typical for winter in your area, you should take care of additional strengthening of the roof. You want to add support posts between the corner supports, above the center posts of the foundation.

Now you can go to the lining of the gazebo with clapboard and roofing work.

For covering the gazebo, we chose clapboard and special fasteners for its simple and aesthetic fastening. The roof is made of wood - strips up to 3 cm thick. We gradually sew up all roof slopes with these strips.

It is imperative to take care of creating a drain - the lower planks should protrude beyond the rafters by at least 10 cm.

In the future, on top of the cladding, the roofing will be laid. The choice of roofing depends on the stylistic nuances, financial capabilities.

The open parts of the gazebo, which are not lined with clapboard, can be decorated with thin wooden planks fixed crosswise.

Since work is carried out with wood, care must be taken to protect the structure from the negative influence of external factors. Wood is treated with special substances to protect it from decay.

Alternative option: log walls

walls of a gazebo made of logsProjects for the construction of a gazebo in the country involve the use of logs to create side walls.

If you choose logs for the walls of the gazebo, keep in mind that you do not need a frame. Direct stacking of logs in rows begins immediately. The first row is mounted on a base protected by waterproofing. The corners are fastened by creating grooves at the ends. Docking is carried out at the corners. The number of rows depends on the project - 3-4 rows are enough for an open type construction.

What material to choose for the roof?

The material that will cover the gazebo roof must meet a number of requirements:

  • resistance to moisture and temperature extremes;
  • high level of strength with low weight;
  • durability;
  • providing protection from precipitation (especially if the gazebo is of a closed type and will be used in the autumn-winter period);
  • stylistic conformity, if the house is covered with soft bituminous tiles, it is naturally better to use them for the gazebo.

The calculation of the roof rafter system depends on the choice of roofing material, so you need to think through all the points in advance. The weight of the future structure, which takes into account the roof as well, affects the choice of the type of foundation.

When choosing, consider the type of gazebo, its style and purpose.

What roofing options can be used for a wooden gazebo:

  1. Ethnic or natural varieties - reeds, shingles, straw. It's stylish, inexpensive, but short-lived. Absolutely not compatible with a barbecue, since the material is flammable, but it looks impressive.gazebo roof made of reed
  2. If the roof is planned to be flat, roll materials are used. For example, roofing material. It is easy and quick to lay it, but it loses aesthetically.gazebo roof made of ruberoid
  3. Slate is an inexpensive material that is suitable for a wooden arbor, but reinforced. The material has a significant weight, so you cannot call it practical. Aesthetically, it is not the most advantageous, but inexpensive. If you plan to install an economy version of the gazebo for a summer residence, this type of roof is suitable.gazebo roof from slate
  4. Decking and metal tiles are practical and beautiful roofing materials for a wooden gazebo. The advantages include: light weight, no special requirements for the rafter system, easy to install and not a professional, aesthetics, variability of color solutions. On the disadvantages: noisy material during precipitation, heats up strongly in the sun.metal roof
  5. Euroslate or ondulin is a lightweight, profiled material on a fabric basis with bitumen impregnation and basalt dressing. The coating is beautiful, moisture resistant, and inexpensive. Cons: can be overgrown with moss, burns out, not the most durable material.gazebo roof made of euro slate
  6. Polycarbonate is an inexpensive, lightweight, flexible material that demonstrates resistance to moisture and noiselessness. This is an option for an open gazebo for summer teas, and not a closed structure or gazebo with barbecue. Melts!
  7. Bituminous shingles are the most preferred, functional and practical option. But not the most economical! Looks harmoniously and stylishly paired with wood. Please note: if you are not a professional, it is recommended to carefully study the features of installing such a roof. The rest of the comments on the soft roof are only positive: it is durable, lightweight, resistant to moisture and UV radiation, rotting, frost, varied and quiet. The material is compatible with barbecue - not flammable.gazebo roof made of bituminous tiles

Foundation options for the gazebo

Above is an example of the technology for installing a columnar foundation. This type combines practicality and ease of installation.

In your arsenal, there may be two more types of bases for a wooden gazebo:

  1. Slab: Suitable for small structures of regular square or round shape. Installation begins with marking the territory. A small pit is created (up to 50 cm deep), the bottom is leveled and a sand cushion is formed with a thickness of about 15 cm. Another 15 cm of crushed stone is poured over the sand. A reinforcing mesh is laid on the crushed stone. Waterproofing in progress. The reinforcement sections should protrude about 15 cm above the foundation. The perimeter is outlined by formwork reinforced with spacers. Concrete is poured inside.concrete slab foundation
  2. A shallow strip foundation is the best option for a closed gazebo. When the territory is marked, the boundaries are marked with pegs. Calculate so that the tape is thicker than walls - up to 30 cm. Depth - up to 70 cm. The depth may depend on the type and characteristics of the soil.At the bottom, a sand cushion is made, gravel is poured on top, reinforcement and low formwork are performed.

High-quality performance of the gazebo is the key to its durability and aesthetics.
